Re: Why our church members are concentrating to other revival groups
- Dear All,
The observations Bro. Mathew Thomas Kannathumuriyil made is relevant
now-a-days prevalent amongst the faithfuls irrespective of their
denominational affiliation. We have a tendency of pointing our fingers to others to escape from our own mistakes/misdeeds. Slowly the brotherhood and love are getting vanished from the Churches and congregations. If we simply observe the groups turning into discussions after the Holy Qurbana on any Sunday, we will be able to understand, how some people were not able to join in any such groups but just be strangers there. They are not at all cared either by the front runners or by the authorities like office bearers, priests and bishops. Very few churches have a system of welcoming a newcomer. A new comer will not be noticed or greeted in majority of churches. My recent experience in one of our own Cathedral at Bangalore during last Passion Week was enabled me to think more on such behaviour.
From 10.00 AM till 4.00 PM I have been there attending the Good Friday
services, nobody never extended even an eye contat on a stranger like me. I wanted to meet the priests (two) who were leading the Good Friday prayer services were not available after the conclusion of the services. I spent almost an hour after the services, but could not meet those two priests.
Even during common Sundays this is the thing we observe in all our Churches. We never try to interact with anybody-else who are not within a group we have made among our own members. There are privileged groups, influential groups, powerful groups (both in financial and oth power bases). Once or twice one will venture to attend to such a Church, and thereafter will look
for other alternatives. Another group who are att acted towards the revival groups are people who are always willing to be guests, but not to be a host.
As we all know, guests will always be given preferences over the regulars.
Once one is tasted the guesthood, it is very difficult to get them back to the fold. Can we blame it as a human nature? No at all, but opportunism. If the entire humanity is acting the same, that can only be termed as human I know few people who have turned to these revival groups were reluctant to pay any money to their respective churches, but after becoming a member in other groups, they pay hefty sums, and suddenly they became most sought after among that group.
What the Holy Bible says on the above attitude:
"1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the
truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truthmen of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone. [2 Themothy, 3:1-9]. The above is followed by a strong commandment from St. Paul :
"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. [2 Themothy, 3:14-17].
- which we conveniently wanted to ignore at time.
Our Priests and Bishops will have their own preferences or choices of
friendship. They all have taken it as granted that they have got POWER to act like that. Slowly an ordinary faithful will have a feeling of alienated from the mainstream and attracted to other revival groups.
We expect others to be PERFECT, but we are not to be PERFECT type of
attitude. It is natural that a well-to-do get more attraction in any social gathering, and the Churches or Congregations are not above it. Here lies the success story of the the revival groups, and they know the prey to be attracted to their prayer group, and easily carrying away faithfuls.

- Dear All,
I fully subscribe to the views aired by Mr. Varghese C.J. Majority of so called 'active members of Parishes' in Orthodox church -regardless of factions- are more worried about church adminstration and running of its affairs. Most of their 'active involvement' in parish is focused in this area. I do sincerely appreciate the efforts being put in on Perunal nercha and Good Friday's Kanji , Pandal etc.. But, administration and running of affairs has some how taken precedence over worship and scaraments - its true with these ' active members'. Not worship or sacraments are pulling them into church, but mere administration and running of affairs. It is the pothuyogam and club like atmosphere generated in church tie these 'active members to church'.
Majority of parishes have two or three rival groups, unless and untill one joins any othese groups he will never have company among parishoners. Even priests has no other alternatives but to make them believe 'on this ROCK is the Church stands'.
It is the Pothuyogam and club like affairs and atmosphere created in church drags these 'active members in to church.
Sermons by Bishops and Achens goes 'deep' in to theological aspects of biblical verses read out in Evangalion, sometimes followed by expalnation of Holy Qurbana in relevance to several biblical verses. Thus most of the faithful is left with a feeling ' it is beyond our understanding'. (Yes it is)But, simple thing is left out - Holy Qurbana is 'celebration of Love' conducted in remembrance of eternal divine love revealed on Cross. I believe, the Church need to reiterate to the faithful that 'Holy Qurbaba' is Love. It is meant for people who live in love and love one another.
Let us part take in Holy Qurbana with a desire to live in Love. Otherwise does it matter how well we administer church and run its affairs?
