Karichal Chundan wins Nehru Trophy Boat Race cup

      ALAPPUZHA: Karichal Chundan rowed by the Kollam Jesus Club lifted this year�s Nehru Trophy Boat Race cup defeating the Cheruthana Chundan rowed by the Angel Boat Club.The third place went to Payippadu Chundan rowed by the Kumarakom Boat Club. Pattara Chundan rowed by the Kumarakom Town Club came fourth.

      Rowers of Pattara Chundan and the winning Karichal Chundan came to blows at the end, injuring five rowers of Karichal Chundan. The captain of Karichal Chundan is Jijy Jacob of Kuttanad.

      In the Veppu A grade category, the Ambalakadavan boat won the first prize In the Veppu B grade,the Punnapra Purakkal boat won the first prize. In the Iruttukuthi A grade category, the winner is the Mammodan boat and in the Iruttukuthi B grade, the Hanuman boat won the first prize. In the Churulan category contest, the Kodimatha boat emerged first.

      In the Thekkanodi women category contest, the Kattil Thekkathil boat became the winner. The Chellikadan boat in which foreign women members led by Julie Amer of Britain took part was defeated by the Kattil Thekkathil team.

      Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde inaugurated the boat race. Cooperation Minister G Sudhakaran presided over the function. K S Manoj and C S Sujatha MPs, K C Venugopal MLA, district panchayat president R Nazar, Alappuzha municipal chairman P P Chitharanjan and Union Urban Development Ministry Secretary M Ramachandran attended the meet. Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan gave away the prizes.

      Final ends in clash The final of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race ended in acrimony here on Saturday as the winning Karichal team was allegedly attacked by the team members of Pattara Chundan which came fourth in the finals. The rowers of the Karichal team, Ajayan, Shaji, George, Subhash and Jayan were injured in the clashes that erupted just after the final.
