      Grand Opening of the social ministry of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, Saint Ephrem Universal Syriac Orthodox Medical Mission, is scheduled at its seminary in Maraat Saidnaya, Damascus on July 5th and 6th. In the history of the Church of Antioch, first in Christendom according to the Bible, this is the first time establishing such an entity in two thousand years.

      On July 6th morning, during the Holy Service at the St. Peter and St. Paul Church, the Patriarch will announce the official opening of it and lighten the oil lamp, which will be assisted by His Beatitude Catholicose Baselios Thomas I and several Metropolitans.

      Its central office is in Los Angeles, California, which was inaugurated recently by Catholicose Baselios Thomas I. The Patriarch has appointed a twenty-five member Executive Board with portfolios and an Advisory Board which are directly under his supremacy, representing various countries. Former Patriarchal Assistant, Archbishop H.E Augen Mor Clemis of California is the president and out of three vice-presidents, H.E Yuhanon Mor Philexinos and H.E Joseph Mor Gregorios are from India. For the Advisory Board, H.E Thomas Mor Themotheos is one of two chairmen. Others from Indian origin are: Dr.Abraham Edathara, Chief Executive Officer, Fr. Babu Peringol, Secretary General (former State Education Advisory Board member, Kerala), Lony Thomas, Treasurer, Dr. Susan Jacob Matteethra, Director of Medical Education, Dr.D.Babu Paul ( former additional Chief Secretary, Kerala), Director of Global Programs, Dr. Roy Thomas Poothicote, Director of Medical Programs, Dr. Abraham Korah, Director of Communication and Sara Varghese Chamathil, Director of Volunteer Medical Core.

      Secretary General Father Peringol said that the immediate goal for the organization is the relief and re-settlement of refugees of war in Iraq which the organization has already started to work with United Nations and other relief agencies. The long term goals are to establish a volunteer medical core in different parts of the world to dispatch to the victims of calamities and to establish a Patriarchal University with a medical branch where it is necessary. Also he said that organizing the chapters in each country is in progress.
