KOCHI: Using pastoral letters for vested interests is against the teachings of Christ, said Geevarghese Mar Kurilose, Metropolitan of Niranam Diocese of Jacobite Church.
Inaugurating a seminar on `Communalism and Orissa in Pastoral Letters organised by the Kerala Christian Youth Movement(KCYM)in Kochi on Sunday, the Metropolitan lashed out at the Church leadership.
The laity should understand the political interests in pastoral letters. The importance of the pastoral letters among the laity is being exploited by the Church leadership. The background for issuing a pastoral letter and its aim should be examined.
We should also ensure that pastoral letters do not cause communal fascism. A secular society can never accept pastoral letters, Mar Kurilose said.
He said that such pastoral letters will pose a threat to a secular society. Gujarat and Orissa incidents are not repeated in Kerala because secular movements are constantly intervening in the issues. Church leaders should have a clear idea before criticising Left parties, he said.
He said that Sangh Parivar was trying to make Orissa as `laboratory of communal violence after Gujarat. There should be a joint movement of believers and non-believers to protest against this, the Metropolitan said.
He said that the Church leaders are not concerned about the issues and problems faced by the common man. They are protecting the vested interests of elite class in the Church. The people in the community have become narrow-minded than ever before,he said.
KCYM state president Renson Markose presided over the function. Fr Aloysius D.Fernandez delivered the keynote address. Simon Britto MLA, Kerala Latin Catholic Association(KLCA) president Felix J.Pulloodan, KCYM general secretary Manoj Cheruvelil spoke on the occasion.
