Govt not to take sides in church dispute: Antony

      PTI [ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2002 5:15:15 PM ]

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony on Wednesday said the UDF
government would strictly maintain its "neutrality" in the dispute between the
Catholicose and Patriarch factions in the Malankara Church in the state.

"Except steps to maintain law and order, there is no role for the government in
the dispute as it is not bound to execute any court order relating to the
      problem," he told reporters here.

"The government is not a party to the dispute nor is there any direction from
either the High Court or Supreme Court to execute any orders."

The chief minister appealed to the spiritual heads and community leaders from
both sides to maintain utmost restraint and ensure that the wrangles would not
spill on to the street in the form of law and order problems.

"Please don't drag the dispute to the street. That is my appeal to all," he
      added.
