KOCHI: In an unprecedented peace initiative, the heads of various
Churches in Kerala have sent a letter to the heads of the feuding
factions of the Malankara Syrian Church offering to mediate between
The letter was cited today by Catholicos Mar Baselios Thomas I of the
Malankara Jacobite Syrian Christian Church at a press conference, who
extended all possible cooperation to the initiative put forward by
the prelates of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Malankara Catholic
Church, Latin Catholic Church, Mar Thoma Church and the CSI.
The signatories, Cardinal Varkey Mar Vithayathil, Archbishop Cyril
Mar Baselios, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, Philipose Mar
Chrysostum and Bishop K J Samuel, called for peace and asked the
feuding Patriarch and Orthodox factions to settle all outstanding
disputes in Christian faith.
While it is not clear when both factions will come together to
discuss issues for a peaceful settlement, Catholicos Mar Baselios
Thomas I assured that they were committed to peace and promised to
take all necessary steps to avoid conflicts.
Since the rival Orthodox faction had opted themselves out of the
Church fold, he said that the dispute could be settled only if they
recognised the Patriarch of Antioch as the supreme head of the Church.
The recent statements by the Catholicos of the Orthodox faction to
derail `Ettnombu Perunal' at Manarcaud St Mary's Church, which begins
on September 1, was provocative as the church belonged to the
Jacobite faction, he said and any attempt at creating disturbances
will be dealt with a firm hand.
The recent incident in which Fr Joseph Vendrappally was buried at the
Vadavukode St Mary's Syrian Church on an appeal from the Orthodox
faction and Government agencies is a clear indication of our desire
for peace, he said, condemning the acts of the rival faction at Adoor
and Thamarachal where they tried to forcibly occupy Jacobite churches.
