- When you believe you've found your ancestor, some of the index cards
will havewritten information for you to copy, but most will just have
Copy all the numbers.
The first number is the age\sex (for example: "21m" means "21 year old
male"). The second number is the line number on the original ship
manifest on which your ancestors name appears. The third number is the
manifest page number. The last number in the right corner of the index
card is a volume number.
With this number, you can find the date the ship arrived.
When the film for the date of ship arrival (volume number) you order
arrives, you will find yourself confronted with passenger manifests of
many ships, in fact, all the ships that arrives at New York on that
First, look again at the numbers you copied from the index card. That
second number (the one next to the age / sex) is the line number, and
the number after that is the page number.
For each ship, find the corresponding page and line.
Eventually, you will come across the correct ship, and when you do,
you have located your ancestor in the ship manifest.
