Spam is junk email, just like the junk mail you get in your "reality" mailbox at home, but worse. Usually it's to sell some wierd thing, a get rich quick scheme, a pyramid scheme Isend me $5 and eventually you'll get more), or pornography. Spammers do not send from "real" email addresses, they have ways of hiding their addresses so most times reporting them to abuse@whatever they are usuing doesn't do much. Which is why hitting the delete key is the thing to do.

Everyone gets spam. You can't help it on the internet. Spammers have softward that take email addresses from everywhere on the net, if you have ever posted to a mailing list, message board, given your email to buy something or whatever. There are companies that sell email addresses also (yahoogroups does not, neither does rootsweb).

Depending on your isp you can filter the mail somehow, or if you see a subject line with words like Viagra or something in it, I dont' even open them, I delete them without r eading. You get used to figuring out which is spam, and generally if people don't recognize the person's name in their mailbox, or the subject line doesn't make sense to them, most people delete them without reading, I know I do.

For more info on mailing list basics see http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/mailinglistbasics

Since we're on the subject, chain emails or things that say "send this to everyone you know" are also spam, only they get you involved. Famous ones are the Bill GAtes is going to send everyone who replies to this $1000, and one about McCdonalds -- both of which have gone on for years. There are websites that notify you of these "urban legends" ..... none of which I can remember off hand, but Cyndi's List http://www.cyndislist.com has a section on them.

And anytime you get something that says "to be removed from this list, click here" DON'T DO IT! That lets the spammer know your email address is "hot" and you will get more, not less. Just delete them.

It's just part of life on the internet... you learn what to delete.
