      Hello,

I am looking for information about the following surnames:
Orowan (or Orovan or Orwan, etc.)
      Bluh
      Kolben
      Kugel
      Politzer
      Scheer
      Spitzer
      among others.

The farthest back I have been able to go is Herschel Orowan, who was born around 1740 and lived in Plevnik. His descendants moved to different villages, but almost entirely in Trencin/Trencsen County until the latter part of the 19th century.

            Sue,
Unfortunately, only the 1995 Census has such a wealth of information that is online.
The FHL has photographed the Slovak Records. They began in eastern Slovakia and worked their way west. For those of us with our genealogy searches in the east have been fortunate because those records have been put online.
I searched the FHL catalogue and could not find any listing for Plevnik-Drienove, nor the large town nearby, Povazska Bystrica. It may be possible those records have not been released yet.
There are other census records. To learn about them go to - http://www.iabsi.com/gen/public/CensusMain.htm
www.iabsi.com Is a website worth knowing.

Thought you might like the information page Plevnik-Drienove - http://en.e-obce.sk/obec/plevnik-drienove/plevnik--drienove.html There is an e-mail address and a link to the town website. At the website on the left you can scroll down to a “Fotoalbum” and click on links under it. You can try writing in English to the e-mail address. English has been taught in schools for over ten years. So someone should be able to read what you write. Keep the sentences simple and to the point.

              Hello,

I am looking for information about the following surnames:
Orowan (or Orovan or Orwan, etc.)
              Bluh
              Kolben
              Kugel
              Politzer
              Scheer
              Spitzer
              among others.

The farthest back I have been able to go is Herschel Orowan, who was born around 1740 and lived in Plevnik. His descendants moved to different villages, but almost entirely in Trencin/Trencsen County until the latter part of the 19th century.

              Sue Orowan Martin

These are the “related” villages to Povazka Bystrica if found with the FHL search. This is a far reaching “related”, Domaniza is 23 km away. Unfortunately, it does not contain Plevnik-Drienove, even though it is only 16 km away.

The next large town up river is Bytca. Its “related” villages don’t contain Plevnik-Drienove either. Even though it is about half way to both larger towns it was not related to either. And FHL has no listing for it.

Anyone have an idea where else to look?

At the risk of boring you, this is a list of all the Trencin County towns and villages where some of my ancestors were born. Apologies for the lack of accent marks. Some of the names are Hungarian, some Slovak -- it just depended on where I got the information. I've tried to relate old and new names, with the new names in parentheses. I'd love to know if anyone else has ancestors from any of these towns.

These family members were pretty much born before 1900. This is a Jewish family, and in the early 20th century, most of them emigrated or moved to Bratislava or Budapest. The more than 200 living descendants of Herschel Orowan are on every continent except Antarctica. Several of us are planning to meet in Zilina in June.

                            Hi Sue,

< I'd love to know if anyone else has ancestors from any of these towns. >

Lately our 2nd cousin and I have been looking for the name Belussik, Belus, Beluch, in Papradno and Bronisste/ Brvniste (They are on his mother's side) in the church records.

On his grandfathers side we are interested in Dvorce/Dvorecz and the name Haniszko

We found a lot of information, but struggle to connect the threads!

                            Christine

                              Hi,

We are looking for the name Haniszko in Levoca and surroundings.

We don't seem to find the records for Dvorecz

From what we read, the village of Dvorecz was destroyed , to make room for a military installation in the 1950's.

In cisarik.com we found that the RC congregation was affiliated with Ruskinovce, that village was also destroyed, and joined to Javorina ?.

FHC has the films for the RC Church in Ruszkinocz/ Ruskinovce. But I can't find them on-line.

Are they on-line and how would I find them ?

I have tried Kezmarok with no success.

                              Christine

Most of my maternal grandfather's line lived in Kotesova, but there
was some movement in other parts of the county. Main surnames are

Jew in Kotesova was related to every other (there weren't very many
and there is tons of intermarriage). I have some Zilina refs in my

There's only one person from Kotesova that I'm aware of, and that is Leopold Gruenwald, b. 1869, who married an Orowan.

There are half a dozen Pollaks; they are from Plevnik, Zilina, and Sulov.

I'll take the conversation with you off the list so that others won't be bored!

My maternal grandmother is from Kocise. Both grandparents moved to

I have been having a hard time locating his records. I know very little about his family since he died when my father was 14. He died 8/14/1931 at the age of 36 b. 1895), another record shows b. 1890.

On my grandparents marriage certificate it shows him being from the village of Kishidveg/Pasika in Bereg County. He was Greek Catholic.

I understand my father’s name was changed to Kobec when he started school around 1921.

Any information on the village name or grandfather would be so helpful.

Apologies for the lack of accent marks. Some of the names are Hungarian, some Slovak -- it just depended on where I got the information. I've tried to relate old and new names, with the new names in parentheses. I'd love to know if anyone else has ancestors from any of these towns.

The more than 200 living descendants of Herschel Orowan are on every continent except Antarctica. Several of us are planning to meet in Zilina in June.

I noticed Christine mentioned the Hanisko name from Dvorce. I know of a researcher by the name of Dushan Hanisko whose family comes from that village. Is this person still actively researching?

Apologies for the lack of accent marks. Some of the names are Hungarian, some Slovak -- it just depended on where I got the information. I've tried to relate old and new names, with the new names in parentheses. I'd love to know if anyone else has ancestors from any of these towns.

I have been in touch with a number of ppl from the old village (including Dushan) and they hold annual get togethers at the site of the old village. Many of the families, including mine lived in that one little village for hundreds of years and it was all just wiped off in the span of a few months. Among the people forced off were some of my grandmother's aunts and uncles. Anyway I'll drop you an email once I know what domain to send it to.
