I have found my grandparents (both sets) in Slovakia. Some searching, but lots of DETECTIVE work! But...in the U.S. they have dropped off the face of the earth. I'm taking a break and deciding which way/where to go from here.

      Cheers,

      JB

      Sandra,
I feel your pain. My family seems to have dropped off the planet.. A lot depends upon what they were getting away from? Was it danger, or just simple economics.
At someone's suggestion, I have recently joined FACEBOOK, not just to check out the different people with my family's surnames, but to give any survivors a chance to FIND ME.
Yes, microfilms are good, and the census records, and ship manifests, etc. but sometimes one just PLAYS DETECTIVE. It can be fun.

      Hello All,

I have viewed the 1869 Hungarian Census for Toke Terebes (Trebisov) and it confirmed by suspicions about some family members - they and their nuclear family were no longer in the village.

My question is when a person decided to leave their home, (not to emmigrate)generally , how far did they go?

I understand the reasons a person/family would leave their village, but I would think they would probably not go too far. I'd like to check for additional records and was wondering how big of a haystack my needles was located in.

      Thanks,
      Sandra
