I am using Family Tree Maker 2006 but will be upgrading to 2010 this Christmas. I also use Personal Ancestral File Version 5 because it has a more robust report feature than FTM has.
As to names and spelling, one of the basic tenets of genealogy is that you use the spelling of a place name as it was spelt at the time an event happened NOT what it is called today. Then in the 'notes' section you can record what the modern spelling is. This can lead to lots of confusion and arguments.
For instance, for many years Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was spelt with the "h", then without the "h" and I believe around 1912 the U.S. Government finally standardized it to Pittsburgh. So in my files I have people being born, married or died in Pittsburg and in Pittsburgh depending upon when the event happened.
What has caused a lot of family arguments is a branch of the family who were born in that part of Virginia which became West Virginia in 1860's. I recorded them as being born in Virginia because that is what it was when they were born. My cousins insist it should be West Virginia since that is what is on some of the marriage and death certificates as the place of birth. Interesting enough is that of the 8 children in this family, all of whom were born prior to 1860 in Virginia, half of them have West Virginia listed as their place of birth and the other half as Virginia on their death certificates.
Eastern Europe poses the same problem. My father's side of the family was born in East Prussia. The town they were born in became part of Poland after WW II. So do I say my great grandparents were born in East Prussia or in Poland and do I use the old Prussia village name or the modern Polish name. The answer is that I use East Prussia and the Prussian village name.
As to diacritical marks, it depends upon your software and what typesets your computer supports. I use them if possible, i.e. the German umlauts.

Subject: [S-R] Redoing the family tree
First time around I input a lot of things with
variations on spelling and mistakes in relationships
(bound to happen with 5 people having the same name).
What programs do most of you use?
Do you enter US or Slovak or Hungarian spelling?
Do you enter with or without Slovak diacritical marks?
I think my program is an old version of Family Treemaker.
