Okay folks, there are a lot of you out there who have been jumping on various inquiries. So, I decided to put this out to the experts:

Many Slovaks went to Streator, Illinois to work in the coal mines when they arrived. My great-grandfather immigrated in 1890, arrived in New York,?and went to Streator. I am wondering if anyone has specific information about what arrangements could have been made with the "employers" regarding passage on the ships and transportation out to Illinois. I heard (I know rumors are dangerous) that the colleries recruited from Central Europe and "assisted" those who wanted a "good job" in America. I believe one of the coal companies was Vermillion Colleries. Did they have an "incentive program?"? Did they provide "company housing?" Just some things I am wondering about - maybe someone has information?
