I to am researching families from Zvala. My wife is Sloviak and her mother was from Zvala. Surnames we are researching are Makaj, Kapko, Sugar(s) Turanszky
I have history on these families after they arrived in the states and settled in Penn. in the early 1900's

Subject: [S-R] 1890 and 1900 Slovak Census
I found a reference in a 1994 edition of "In Search of Your European
Roots" Second Edition by Angus Baxter on page 244, stating,
"In Slovakia censuses were held in 1809, 1880, 1890, and 1910, and
then in 1920 and every ten years since. They are in the National
Archives (Archivni Sprava, Kriskova 7, 811 04 Bratislava). Copies of
the pre-1920 ones are in the National Archives of Hungary (Magyar
Orszagos Leveltar, Becsikapu ter 4, Budapest)."
Can someone explain what information is contained in the 1890 and
1900 censuses? I am hoping it shows the names of each individual in a
household and maybe their ages. What should I expect to find?
I emailed a genealogist in SE Slovakia, who does work in Budapest and
was recommended by a person from Ancestry.com, to inquire about
obtaining copies from the Budapest Archive for specific surnames and
certain family groups but did not receive a reply. Before I try again

seek (Ruske and Zvala) have a limited amount of or no church records
and these villages are submerged now (a dam was built). I am also
seeking data from two Saros (Orlov and Malcov) villages for the same
I have already gone through the 1869 census but need data from a more
Thanks for your assistance.
