      Hi Carey -

You have roots in a magical place!!!! Z~diar is a beloved, folky
shepherding village in the gorgeous Beliansky Tatry Mts. on the Slovak border
with Poland. It has become a major tourist area for it's gorgeous scenery and
rich folk culture. I am taking people to the festival there this summer in
mid-August when Zdiar celebrates 750 years of its existence. The picture
perfect church with its artistic iron crosses around it will be filled iwth
people in folk dress for this special annual event.

You will find a lot of variation in the name spellings - due to Hungarian
influence, Latin used in the records and the Goral dialect in the region.
Wonder if your Smerek was Smierchak at one time - taking a Smierchak there.

      Best wishes -

      helene
