For all of you looking to identify units from old photographs or
wanting the best information out on the web, do what homework you
can and then go to http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/
and post the picture there in the discussion group. You will at
best recieve a generic answer that it is the (eg)"uniform of a
corporal in the Hussars, ca. 1905-1918."

Don't get your hopes up though, the answer comes back to what you
heard here - you must know the unit the person was in. The
exception is for officers, they have much more complete records.

Frank, I dropped in at the Nottendorfergasse office in 2002. The
people were extremely proper and polite to the point of trying to
insist I drop in od 'Dr. So & So', the expert in that field. I only
had a few hours to pass, so spent my tme with no plan but enjoyably
browsing old volumes. They are now on a pay system. You all will
have to research that, as I do not have the details. PS It turned
out my 'old picture' was likely from the very early Czechoslovak
      army after WW I.

I just followed my own advice and looked over the topics in teh
discussion forum at Glenn Jewison's site (refferenced below. They
have a current thread on teh Kriegesarchive at
        http://p205.ezboard.com/faustrohungarianlandforcesdiscussionforumfrm0
        .showMessage?topicID=1626.topic

If that doew not work, go to the site and start looking down the
        list of discussion topics.

Oh, the Kriegesarchiv is conveniently close to an S bahn (trolly)
        stop.

I only worry about the "or whatever."

I have a letter from my ggg grandfather. (maybe to many greats there) Where
it lists his division or whatever and rank. At least I am pretty sure.

I would recommend taking the photo with you. You might learn his rank and
perhaps the kind of service (duty), infantry, search light, etc. but only if
the insignia are clearly shown. The Austro-Hungarian army was a relative
poorly equipped army and had a large variety of uniforms. Many wore what
was available. If no insignias are evident you won't learn much. You
cannot tell the unit from the photo unless there is some signage visible in
          the photo.

Previously, the O"sterreichisches Staatsarchiv was at Minoriten platz 1,
          1014 Wien (Main State archives).
And the Kriegsarchiv was at Stiftgasse 2, 1010 Wien (Military Records branch
          of the Austrian Nattional Archives).

Both archives have moved to a single location located at: Nottendorfer
Gasse 2, 1030 Wien. The archives have been located at the Nottendorfer
Gasse address at least since January 1996. I am not sure of the exact date
          that they moved.

I plan to be in Vienna in October of this year and would like to look up my
father-in-law's records. He served in WWI for Austria I think. Can you tell
me where would I should start?

The last time I was in the Vienna Archives was 1996. I asked about my
grandfather who served in WWI with the A-H armed forces. I was told at
          that
time that the only way to find specific information about an individual
soldier was to know the specific unit with which he served. The records
were not indexed as of 1996 but that there was a study starting that was
going to compile the hospital records of wounded soldiers.

During WWI, the A-H army used a variety of locations such as schools,
monasteries, convents and similar buildings for army hospitals. The
          records
are apparently in good condition and a study was starting to compile that
          data.

I have a post card that my grandfather sent to my grandmother from one of
these types of hospitals. The A-H military expert at Vienna archives
examined the post card and stated that information might be available in
several years. I have not been back to check further. That is something
          still on my "to-do" list.

          Hey guys,

My great grandfather, Andrej Harnis, is an enigma to me and my entire
family. This is due to the fact that my grandma (his daughter) and her
brother were orphaned at a young age. My grandma always heard from her
aunt that her father served in WWI "in the Kaiser's army" and had died
from long term exposure to mustard gas. While death records indicate
he died from something else I do not doubt the WWI story.

Anyways my question is how would I request records on Slovak soldiers
during WWI? I believe the Hungarian Archives has the records but dont
          know.

Previously, the O"sterreichisches Staatsarchiv was at Minoriten platz 1,
1014 Wien (Main State archives). And the Kriegsarchiv was at Stiftgasse 2,
1010 Wien (Military Records branch of the Austrian Nattional Archives).

Both archives have moved to a single location located at: Nottendorfer Gasse
2, 1030 Wien. The archives have been located at the Nottendorfer Gasse
address at least since January 1996. I am not sure of the exact date that
            they moved.

Anyways my question is how would I request records on Slovak soldiers
during WWI? I believe the Hungarian Archives has the records but dont
            know.

It looks like a good translation except that it is missing all the
ruffles and flourishes, and in the A-H society, ruffles and
flourishes is what life was all about. Quite seriously, it seems
ceremony and title was a very, very important part of their lives.

              "Our dear and true
              Franz Maczek
born in the year 1869, to award in Lower Austria,
              Colonel
Commander of the field artillery regiment No. 5, Knight of our
              Austrian Imperial Leopold Order"

In this sense it is tempting to say the 'zu' is "for award" and
not "to award" in the normal use, meaning the award was given in

                  Dear Mr Waber,

In reply to your letter we can inform you about the followings:

We do not preserve any archival materials you are searching for. For
purpose of your successful research work, it is worthwhile to know
that during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy the new
recruits were not registered on the basis of their permanent domicile
but their military units where they served. The Personal Registration
Lists of the soldiers served in the k. k. Army prior to 1869 can be
found at the keeping of the Kriegsarchiv, Vienna, Austria, according
                  to units.
The personal military records written after 1869 have been handed over
to the country which the soldiers, who were concerned by those
records, belonged to as citizens after the collapse of the
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Accordingly, the personal documentation of
the soldiers came from Upper Hungary fell theoretically into the
ownership of the Tsechoslovakian authorities. Those further fate is
                  unknown for us.

                  Yours sincerely,

                  Budapest August 08, 2005

                  (Lt. Col. Dr. Attila Bonhardt)

As Frank says, you need the unit. If you know where he was born, you can
figure out the recruitment district from which units were created. It will
be futile to go if you don't know where he was born.

                    Have you read

It's most everything I know about military service an records in these
                    regions.

But, as I said in my earlier message you need to know the specific unit in
which your father-in-law served in order to find him. If you should learn
that they have completed their study of A-H WWI military hospitals, I would
like to know the results. It may be time for another trip.

                    Enjoy,

Anyways my question is how would I request records on Slovak soldiers
during WWI? I believe the Hungarian Archives has the records but dont
                    know.

I would recommend taking the photo with you. You might learn his rank and
perhaps the kind of service (duty), infantry, search light, etc. but only
                        if
the insignia are clearly shown. The Austro-Hungarian army was a relative
poorly equipped army and had a large variety of uniforms. Many wore what
was available. If no insignias are evident you won't learn much. You
cannot tell the unit from the photo unless there is some signage visible
                        in
                        the photo.

Previously, the O"sterreichisches Staatsarchiv was at Minoriten platz 1,
                        1014 Wien (Main State archives).
And the Kriegsarchiv was at Stiftgasse 2, 1010 Wien (Military Records
                        branch
                        of the Austrian Nattional Archives).

Both archives have moved to a single location located at: Nottendorfer
Gasse 2, 1030 Wien. The archives have been located at the Nottendorfer
Gasse address at least since January 1996. I am not sure of the exact date
                        that they moved.

The
                        records
are apparently in good condition and a study was starting to compile
                        that
                        data.

I have a post card that my grandfather sent to my grandmother from one
                        of
these types of hospitals. The A-H military expert at Vienna archives
examined the post card and stated that information might be available in
several years. I have not been back to check further. That is
                        something
                        still on my "to-do" list.

Anyways my question is how would I request records on Slovak soldiers
during WWI? I believe the Hungarian Archives has the records but dont
                        know.

I plan to be in Vienna in October of this year and would like to look up
                          my
father-in-law's records. He served in WWI for Austria I think. Can you

me where would I should start?

The last time I was in the Vienna Archives was 1996. I asked about my
grandfather who served in WWI with the A-H armed forces. I was told at
                          that
time that the only way to find specific information about an individual
soldier was to know the specific unit with which he served. The records
were not indexed as of 1996 but that there was a study starting that was
going to compile the hospital records of wounded soldiers.

During WWI, the A-H army used a variety of locations such as schools,
monasteries, convents and similar buildings for army hospitals. The
                          records
are apparently in good condition and a study was starting to compile
                          that
                          data.

I have a post card that my grandfather sent to my grandmother from one
                          of
these types of hospitals. The A-H military expert at Vienna archives
examined the post card and stated that information might be available in
several years. I have not been back to check further. That is
                          something
                          still on my "to-do" list.

Anyways my question is how would I request records on Slovak soldiers
during WWI? I believe the Hungarian Archives has the records but dont
                          know.

In the photos of the presentation, it looks like Karl the First did
the presenting, so it was after Francis Josef. At a glance it looks
like he listed his titles down to the fried egg dinner (emporer,
kinng, duke, down to some territories some ancestor ruled for a few
years centuries back and then lost).

The book with kondrc looks like a standard translation of Kafka
in "Slovenian-Austrian Kafka Study". It looks like Kondric claims
authorship and the translation from Slovak into Slovenian.

The (Hrsg.) after his name could be a contraction for Herzog or
                            Baron.

it as such. I figured if my source was worng there would be plenty

The two are remarkably close, so close with all declensions and all
that I will not venture to guess without checking.
