Here is a partial response to a similar query on the Delphi site by
      Naartjie:

"Re military records - the beauty of the records is that they are not
geographically limited, and are alphabetically indexed by surname!
They extend from earliest 1780 - 1930 at present and have been
microfilmed by the Mormons so you can order them from your local FHS.
The indexes to them are under: Family Search (Mormon site), Austria -
military records. They are known as Grundbuchblatter, and
Grundbuchblatter diverse (665 microfilms), are, of course, in German
to 1918, but the data on each soldier is good. Besides a physical
description and service record, they give: YEAR of birth, TOWN of
birth, occupation, marital status, religion. In the case of my Czech
      great grandfather, 1845 - 1893, who served 1866 - 1876, they also give
wife's name and maiden surname, the year of marriage and her town of
      birth."
