Subject: [S-R] why we do this

      Hi Bill,
Thank you for beginning a very interesting thread.
Once my aunt Ella remarked how her mother fibbed about her true age of 16 and
told officials that she was 18, and made the trip from Slovakia to Castle
Garden. I asked her who her Mom was coming to live with. Aunt Ella said her
mother did not know anyone in New Jersey, but, that she soon found work helping
to take care of a family. She married in 1895, had three children, became
widowed and then went back to Slovakia. She met her second husband, my
grandfather, and came back to Jersey in 1905, with her husband-to-be following after
them the next year. I started to wonder what type of courageous soul would do
      all of this.
I was hooked. This was 8 years ago.

All of my research has produced the dream to retire and live in Slovakia for
a few years; doing research and meeting cousins. I dream that my family here
in America will get interested and visit Slovakia. I am struggling to learn
the Slovak language. There are people helping me to get through the paperwork
battles of obtaining the Slovak Expatriate status card. I am grateful for
their interest and support. They are some of the most gracious people I have
met. The people on this list are a never ending source of help and
encouragement. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and knowledgeable friends.

I do not have any desire to look for free property in Europe or to sponge off
still-unknown relatives in Slovakia. However, I can understand how folks in
Slovakia wonder about all this interest in their villages. Picture people in
Slovakia writing to us, looking for family links and trying to find the towns
where their grandparents' siblings landed. Most of us would be thrilled.....
but people not interested in genealogy may be taken aback. It would be a bolt
out of the blue. You have to have this in your heart and soul to go to these
great lengths. It is a spiritual and emotional trip that we Slovak World and
Slovak Roots people are taking. It is not financially rewarding at all.
      Usually, quite the opposite.
I am happy for the successes that the Slovak Republic is enjoying and wish
the country the best of prosperity. They deserve it. However, I must admit
that the American dollar is not going to go as far as it did in years gone by.
The Euro is giving us a run for our money. Literally. But, where there is a
      will there is a way.
Which leads to the question, what proverb do Slovaks use to say our version
of "Where there is a will ... there is a way"?
