The surname Kondrc came from Brestovany located 31 miles ENE of
Bratislava and just east of Trvana and from Buc^any located just NE
      of Brestovany.

The Slovakia telephone directory lists 2 surname Kondrc under Trvana.
The surname Kuracina can also be from Brestovany.
The directory lists 6 surnames Kuracina under Bratislava.

Back in July 1998 I had researched surname Kuracina from Canada.
There was a Lawrence (Texas) and David (his brother in Canada) and a
      Peter (in Canada)
      >From Predajná (Sk) Garampétri (H) and Jasenie (Sk) Jecenye (H) east
      of Banská Bystricia, Slovakia.

One surname wrote had been told surname Kuracina meant 'chicken soup'.
Surname is derived from root word kura/kurc^a meaning chicken, hen.
In Slovak 'chicken soup' is slepac^ia polievka.)

Although my surname is similar there is no connection.

Don't believe they were related to the Endicott, NY surnames
      Kuracina.
The former surnames emigrated from Bratislava to Canada 1910-1919.
Believe that they never received a reply from any Kuracina in New York
      State.
A Dr. Elaine Kuracina and a another Kuracina who was a lawyer ?

What do you mean "a day of joining"? Records are organized first by year,
then by recruiting district. In small districts If you know the district,
it is usually not difficult to to locate the name
There is no cross-reference by name. You still need to approach the correct
            national archive.

Well actually all i know is the year and the possible location (Brestovany) guessing that both families lived near each other.. I know my line of Kondrcs are from Brestovany, and basically hoping that Cecilia Kondrc line is from that same general area. But 1917 from the book is the year that her father went to war. I trying to figure out how I am related to Cecilia was hoping my figureing out her fathers name to begin with might be a start.

Well thats about it for now that i Can think off, thanks for all the good info so far, really wish i was closer or had some time to get over to Slovakia.

                Trvana.
The surname Kuracina can also be from Brestovany.
The directory lists 6 surnames Kuracina under Bratislava.

Back in July 1998 I had researched surname Kuracina from Canada.
There was a Lawrence (Texas) and David (his brother in Canada) and
                a
                Peter (in Canada)
                >From Predajná (Sk) Garampétri (H) and Jasenie (Sk) Jecenye (H)
                east
                of Banská Bystricia, Slovakia.

One surname wrote had been told surname Kuracina meant 'chicken
                soup'.
Surname is derived from root word kura/kurc^a meaning chicken,
                hen.
In Slovak 'chicken soup' is slepac^ia polievka.)

Although my surname is similar there is no connection.

Don't believe they were related to the Endicott, NY surnames
                Kuracina.
The former surnames emigrated from Bratislava to Canada 1910-1919.
Believe that they never received a reply from any Kuracina in New
                York
                State.
A Dr. Elaine Kuracina and a another Kuracina who was a lawyer ?

So your grandfather was Frank Kondrc.
Who was Anna Kondrc (1890-1980) ? perhaps née (maiden name) Benyak ?
Thew other surname posted was Benjak.
In Slavic languages and Hungarian the letter j is pron. y.
                  PA as in Kittanning ?

So Lejskove must be located near Nyitra ?
Perhaps it was actually Lajosfalu, Lojschow, Lajosfalva, Lajos,
Lojschow, Lajos^ová, now called L'udovítová and located 5 miles north
                  of Nitra.

Yes Frank Kittanning they lived Charleroi (sp) washington pa for a bit then moved to Ford City. (which i think is part of Kittianning. Anna's maiden name was Benjak from the SS-5 form. Her parents names where Paul Benjak and Maria Lisciski.

                    So we have
Micheal Kondrc + Maria Kuracina (Houibe)sp. Brestovany) we had a discussion on what the H was a while back. but we figured we could read brestovany at the least.
-- Steve Kondrc - Came to America 1906 from the 1930 Census form (married in 1907 in Cherolio PA)

Paul Benjak + Maria Lisciski Lejskove, Czechslovakia
-- Anna Benjak - came to america in 1907 from the 1930 Census form

                    Steve + Anna

Frank Kondrc married a Jolan Maczek
                    ----ect ect ect

Going to try and scan some of the SS-5 Forms so maybe others can get a better look at it.

                    as a side note
can anyone tell me about this I found a Beyk, Anna on roughly 18 yrs old on a ship out of Bremen that arrivede Aug 7, 1907 not sure if its her. But its the closest thing i can find. And i cant few the orginal because i guess its not scanned at the moment.

know my line of Kondrcs are from Brestovany, and basically hoping that
Cecilia Kondrc line is from that same general area. But 1917 from the
book is the year that her father went to war. I trying to figure out
how I am related to Cecilia was hoping my figureing out her fathers

So your grandfather was Frank Kondrc.
Who was Anna Kondrc (1890-1980) ? perhaps née (maiden name) Benyak ?
Thew other surname posted was Benjak.
In Slavic languages and Hungarian the letter j is pron. y.
                    PA as in Kittanning ?

So Lejskove must be located near Nyitra ?
Perhaps it was actually Lajosfalu, Lojschow, Lajosfalva, Lajos,
Lojschow, Lajos^ová, now called L'udovítová and located 5 miles north
                    of Nitra.

                    v
                    Frank Kurcina

Many Polish surnames end in -ski or -cki.
In older records you sometimes read -sky (before spelling rules
were adapted); but in recent times tendency to insist on -ski.
Probably a possessive affix added to name which evolved from person's
characteristics (such as 'tall, short, etc.), occupation, or place
                      of residence.
In Czech and Slovak, the -sky is akin to the Polish -ski, while -cky
                      is similar to Polish -cki.
Lisciski might have been spelled Liseiski or Liseski or some other
                      spelling ?

EIR list 53 surnames Benyak and 30 surnames Benjak.
Anna was listed with the Dutch surnames Beyk in EIR which was not
unusual with Eastern European names, especially if Polish.
The Anna Beyk, age 18 (b. abt. 1899) from Lysakow, Galicia looks like
                      her entry to US.
No image copy of ship manifest so only know her Last Residence in
                      Europe.

There are 5 Lysakow located in Poland.

there were two surnames Sokolowski who traveled with her to US.
They went to b-i-l Jakub Trubacik in St. Louis, MO.

Jolan looks like a short form of Polish first name Jolanta, Jolenta
                      (Yolanda)- Saint.

Charleroi was located in Washington CO south of Pittsburgh and between

                      >From the late 1700s until the end of WW I, Poland did not exist as a
country. It was divided among the Russian, German (Prussian), and
                      Austrian Empires.
The southern Polish territories around Kraków and Lwów were
incorporated into the Austrian Empire and renamed "Galicia".

By the First Partition of Poland (1792), Austria had obtained Galicia
(consisting of Red Russia, the city of Lemberg [Lwów], a part of
western Podolia, and southern Little Poland). Austria did not take
any Polish land in the Second Partition. During the Third Partition
1795) of Poland, Austria took the remainder of Little Poland and
                      Kraków.

Galicia was formerly a Austrian Crownland and part of Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy(1867-1918). Sometimes referred to as Austrian Poland.
Other names for the area were Galicja (Polish), Galizien (German),
Halychyna (Ukrainian) and Rus Halicka (Polish).

In 1918, Galicia was annexed to Poland as "Malopolska" (Little
                      Poland).
After the 1939 partition of Poland by Germany and Russia, East Galicia
became part of Ukraine while West Galicia remained in Poland.
Its former territories are now shared between southern Poland and
                      western Ukraine.

Thanks Frank and William. I think Steve and Anna are buried in Ford City @ Holy Trinity if my memory serves me. Well i scanned the Ss-5 forms does anyone want to take a gander at them to see if they can gleam anything else off it.

As for Jolan she was born in Prague to an Elly Perutz and Walter maczek. Found living Maczek in berlin. Walter died in a car accident in Carrcicone France (sp). Elly married like 3 times. Elly Perutz (maiden), Elly Maczek, Elly Elliman (last know name) and one more which eludes me but have it written down somewhere. Jolan is my grandmother and still alive so i can get some good info. She came to america via Hallifax so I am trying to get the papers from that but have not had the time to look it up. She came on the MS Erria.

There is only 1 Kondrc that I know left in America, and she is around 93 i think. We try and get as much info as we can from here.

Im not sure if Anna/Steve came throught Ellis Island. *i did do the missing manifest search for Anna Beyk name but there was no listing saw a few of the pages from the Krown Prince Willhelm.

On a side note I also have like a 5 page thing from the austrain army saying that my great great grandfather Maczek was a noble or knighted for his duties (in german). And I know that Cecilia's father was in the military (which is the only way right now i can get his name).

                          Michael in Slovak would be?
                          Steve in Slovak would be?
                          Maria in Slovak would be?

not sure if any of the names change.

I remember reading somewhere that the female version of a name adds ova in slovak? and Frank added the sky info.

Maybe that might help me in my quest?
                          Thanks for the continued help

Polish y is pron. i and letter w is pron. v.

Bsides a Katarina Kondrc, Slovak, who emigrated from Buc^any in 1921
there were two surnames Sokolowski who traveled with her to US.
They went to b-i-l Jakub Trubacik in St. Louis, MO.

Jolan looks like a short form of Polish first name Jolanta, Jolenta
                          (Yolanda)- Saint.

Charleroi was located in Washington CO south of Pittsburgh and between
                          Cokesburg and Donora PA .

Ford City and Kittanning in Armstrong CO located north of
                          Pittsburgh.

K, guess the next question would be does anyone know who I would have to contact, or go about contacting for imformation if available about a relative or 3 in the austrian army roughly 1907 for the Kondrc, dont have exact dates of the Maczek (another family line).

Also anyone have links for the slovak or Czech phone books

One of most common Slavic surname affixes is the one denoting gender
of the bearer -ová (Slovak), -owa (Polish), and -oba (Russian).
As a rule of Slovak grammar, female surnames end in -á, -ská, or -ová.
The feminine form of the surnames is considered merely a separate form
of same surname, not a distinct surname in itself.
If the surname is adjectival in origin , i.e., ends in -y', the ending
changes to -á, so that wife of pán (Mr.) C^erny' would be pani (pi)
(Mrs.) C^erná and their daughter would be slec^na (sl) (Miss) C^erná
If surname is a noun in form or origin the suffix -ová is added to it,
                                  e.g., pán Kovác^, pani Kovác^ová, slec^na Kovác^ová.

the in 1930 it was Steve Kondris. All Family members where accounted
for in both Census forms so i know its them. Fun fun trying to think

just mistranslated. Well im off for a bit,

I can translate document too if I had a copy of it.
Otherwise have to spend days or weeks trying to determine what were
                                    the actual German words.
Some of the words are obviously misspelled.

(rough estimate of the letters and what not, supposed to be german, I think i had it translated a while back roughly to english) I have the pages scanned and saved as jpg files if you would like to take a look)

                                      And keeps on going :)

Like i said its a rought esitmate. My other computer with the majority of my family tree stuff just crashed this morning, so im had to pull up #2 to play on.

My grandfather Steve Kondrc worked at the Pittsburg Plate and Glass, would i be able to contact them for employment records and/or whould it give any valuable information?

Still cant find steve kondrc from ellis island.
I dont know if i already said this but i did find steve kondrc in the 1920 adn 1930 census for PA. First he was named Steve Kordic and the in 1930 it was Steve Kondris. All Family members where accounted for in both Census forms so i know its them. Fun fun trying to think of all the variations of the Kondrc that could have been spelled or just mistranslated. Well im off for a bit,
                                      Keep up the good info.

                                      Michal (Misko, Miso) (Sk)
                                      Michal (P)

                                      Stephen, Steven (E)
                                      István (Pista, Pistika, Pityu) (H)
                                      Stefan (G) (P)
                                      Stefan (Steko, Stevko) (Sk)

What was the title of the 5 page Austrian Army document written in

During WW II there was a famous Polish General Maczek.

                                        Colonel das

I take that from a special card of acronyms from the book by v.G.-

Otherwise have to spend days or weeks trying to determine what were

Some of the words are obviously misspelled.

"Anschluss" - Annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938
In 1938 Germany annexed parts of Bohemia and Moravia as well and
created a country called the second Czecho-Slovak Republic.
Then in 1939 Hitler's Germany incorporated Bohemia and Moravia into
                                            Deutschland.

Not sure what the invention was but his name was Frank Benjak. Anna also had two other sisters that I know about mary and Teresa.

You finally put a handle on a surname I actually know something about
Friedrich Graf von Toggenburg (1866 - 1956) Tirol, Austria 1914-1917.
