38193Re: [S-R] understanding marriage records
- Jul 28, 2014Curt,Thanks for the lesson on entries. Especially in this case of a second marriage. Can you translate the two entries that were in Slovak. Google earth on the first one could only give “serf” as the second word after widower. It could do nothing with the second.Michael
You said "It makes no sense that Martin Stepanovic’s name would be in the “Parents” box for her marriage to Harustak".
Well, it does make sense. It is really not in a parent box. It is in her box. It is very common in marriage registers to identify a woman who is a widow by her previous husband's name. Sometimes it will also add her parents and her maiden name, but sometimes not. This is one of the cases where it just does not identify her parents or maiden name. This register gives that on her first marriage. Note that on her first marriage, she marries a widower farmer, Martin Stepanovic. Note that the register does not give his parents name in this case. Apparently because he is a widower. This a common pattern in registers, but not always. It drives genealogists crazy, but we have to be ready for it. To find his parents name, you have to find his first marriage.
