      ENVIRONMENTAL ASSISTANT - Clean Air Specialty

      Appointment Type: Provisional. Incumbents will be required to succeed in a
      Civil Service Examination process for this class in order to be considered
      for a permanent appointment.

      Program Background: The mission of the City and County of San Francisco's
      Department of the Environment (SF Environment) is to improve, enhance, and
      preserve the environment and promote San Francisco's long-term
      environmental
      sustainability. SF Environment includes Green Building, Recycling, Toxics
      Reduction, Environmental Justice, Clean Air, Energy, Urban Forest and
      Public
      Information Programs. This position will work as a Clean Air Program
      Assistant under the supervision of the Program Manager.

      Position Description: The 5638 Environmental Assistant will perform
      professional level work. Duties may include, and are not limited to the
      following:

      * Supports the implementation of the Healthy Air and Smog Ordinance;
      * Functions as project manager for a number of projects including
      alternative fuels and transportation demand management projects;
      * Oversees the work of interns and volunteers, as needed;
      * Plans and supports the implementation of projects;
      * Represents City at community forums;
      * Assists in efforts to secure grants for the Clean Air Program;
      * Performs regular research and critical analysis of all aspects of clean
      fuel vehicles and infrastructure;
      * Supports budget development and coordination;
      * Researches consultants; and
      * Other duties as assigned

      Minimum Qualifications:

      Possession of a baccalaureate degree in public administration, business
      administration, accounting, biology, environmental sciences,
      transportation,
      clean air or a related field from an accredited college or university; AND
      one (1) year of full time equivalent experience performing duties
      described
      for this class, within the area of clean air or transportation demand
      management.

      Knowledge of alternative fuels and transportation demand management
      issues;
      air pollution and its impact on the environment; indoor and outdoor air
      quality issues; and local clean air infrastructure (e.g., Bay Area Air
      Quality Management District.)

      Ability to use a personal computer; utilize word processing programs,
      database, spreadsheet, and communication software; work with a wide
      variety
      of individuals and organizations including air quality management
      organizations, governmental employees and businesses; communicate
      effectively both orally and in written format; negotiate and
      organizational
      skills.

      Desirable Qualifications:

      * Excellent communication, presentation and computer skills.
      * Fluent in Spanish, Cantonese or other language commonly spoken in San
      Francisco.

      Selection Process:

      Position Description: The Associate will assist the Program Manager and
      the
      TDM (Transportation Demand Management) Coordinator in performing
      professional level work including:

      * Assist in providing program information to San Francisco residents,
      businesses and City Departments;
      * Assist with public outreach and marketing efforts, including staffing
      information kiosks;
      * Monitor state regulations, attend regular meetings, perform research and
      make public presentations to improve communication about program issues;
      * Assist with program grant applications, reports and newsletter articles
      on
      TDM and Clean Air issues;
      * Update and contribute content for program's webpage;
      * Assist with City Hall Bike Room program management;
      * Provide vehicle demonstration support;
      * Development powerpoint and other presentation material;
      * Assist with Commuter Benefit program promotion efforts;
      * Assist with recruitment of businesses to participate in Emergency Ride
      Home program; and
      * Perform administrative support and other duties and tasks as required by
      the Program.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      * Baccalaureate degree in a related field from a recognized college or
      university;
      * Excellent speaking, writing, researching, organizational and project
      management skills;
      * Responsible, motivated, and able to work independently and in a team;
      * Word processing, powerpoint development, spreadsheet, database and
      internet proficiency, including webpage manipulation/input; and
      * Possess a valid California driver's licence.

      Desirable Qualifications:

      * Familiarity with San Francisco;
      * Experience with the City and County of San Francisco (as an
      organization)
      * Fluency in other languages used commonly in San Francisco
      * Some knowledge of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) programs.
