      The Position

      The City of San Ramon is seeking a Senior Planner who is responsible for performing complex planning activities, primarily focusing on current planning.

      Duties and Responsibilities

      The Senior Planner will be responsible for serving as a project manager for complex development applications; providing technical assistance to elected and appointed officials and other departments; identifying and recommending new planning procedures; preparing written project analysis; making recommendations; conducting site inspections; staffing review committees; interfacing with State and Federal Permitting agencies as well as County staff; managing consultant contracts including determining scope of work and budgets; supervising assistant and associate planners; and serving as Deputy Zoning Administrator.

      Examples of projects that the incumbent will be involved include updating the City's Zoning Ordinance Update and Architectural Review Guidelines; processing of development applications for the Crow Canyon and Northwest Specific Plan Areas; staff liaison to the Architecture Review Board and performs other duties of a similar nature or level.


      • Excellent writing, public speaking and problem solving skills;

      • Strong project management skills;

      • Knowledge of planning and zoning theory and principles;

      • Knowledge of architectural and site plan principles;

      • Knowledge of environmental review procedures;

      • Ability to analyze technical documents;

      • Bachelor�s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning or related field; five years planning-related experience; two years project management and lead supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties included above;

      • Computer skills in Word and Excel and familiarity with permit-tracking software;

      • Mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to attend meetings at various sites within the City and away from the City to inspect various work, building or construction sites; strength to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 25 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio; and

      • Possession of a valid California Drivers License by the date of hire.

      Compensation and Benefits

      New hires are typically not brought in above the mid salary range. For promotional appointment, a salary within the above salary range will be determined once a job offer is made. The City's excellent benefit package includes PERS 2% at 55; retiree medical benefits based on length of service; 12 days vacation with 1-4 years service; adoption benefits; Section 124 Plan; 12 days sick leave annually; long term disability; Employee Assistance Program; life insurance; health, dental and vision plans; 37.5 hour work week for most employees.

      Selection Process

      The most-qualified applicants, as determined by initial screening of applications, will be invited to participate in an interview process, which may consist of both written and oral portions. Appointment will be made from the eligibility list established from the results of the interview process.

      Current City employees who are interested in the promotional opportunity must submit both applications and resumes. These will be considered for participation in an Oral Board interview. These individuals may be invited to participate in the second round of interviews.
