      Business Development Internship


      The Community

      The City of San Leandro takes pride in its reputation as an energetic and well-managed city.  It is a city that is sensitive to the needs of its citizens in civic affairs.  A full service city, San Leandro has been governed for nearly a century under the Mayor-Council-Manager form of government.


      San Leandro is located in San Francisco�s East Bay area in Alameda County.  The City is noted for its shoreline area, fine schools, manufacturing base, and affordable housing.  The City is approximately fifteen square miles and has a population of 79,000. 


      The Position

      The Business Development Intern position will provide an aspiring public service student with an opportunity to work in a redevelopment/economic development division in local government.  The position is located in the Office of Business Development, the development arm of the City, housed in the City Manager�s Office.


      As a member of the City Manager�s staff, the Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in local municipal government.  Duties may include assisting citizens� advisory committees and business associations, monitoring and enforcing developer agreements, responding to local business inquiries, and developing marketing materials, the Redevelopment Agency�s Five Year Implementation Plan, Manufacturers� Guide, and other Business Development publications.  In addition, the Intern will have opportunities to sit in on executive meetings, meet with various elected officials and department heads, and attend City Council meetings.  This position is designed to allow for the application of academic theory to a real life work environment. 


      Hours and Salary

      The Intern will be expected to work 32-40 hours per week during from June 1-August 27, 2004.  The start and end dates and the daily schedule are negotiable.  There may be occasional early morning and/or evening meetings required.  There may be an option to continue employment on a part-time basis in September 2004-May 2005.  The pay range is $12.81 to $15.87 per hour (Job Title: Office Assistant III) depending on qualifications. 


      The Application and Selection Process

      The ideal candidate will have knowledge of local government and basic principles of public administration, good interpersonal communication and time management skills, ability to work independently and meet deadlines, and familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite.  Applicants must hold a bachelor�s degree and be enrolled in or accepted to a Master�s Program in City/Regional Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy, Urban Affairs, Business Administration or similar.
