      Renowned urban planner Alain Bertaud will give a talk this coming Monday,
      April 12, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Institute of Urban and Regional Development
      (IURD), 316 Wurster Hall, UC Berkeley.

      Bertaud's topic is: Are Cities Shaped by Markets or by Urban Planners? A
      Comparative Study of the Spatial Structure of Cities. The talk will take
      place in the IURD conference room.

      Bertaud retired in 1999 after a long and distinguished career at the World

      Bank, where he specialized in land use and spatial development issues. He
      now works as an independent consultant. Over the years he has been
      analyzing the interaction between land markets, land use regulations and
      urban shape. He has developed a number of indicators to monitor the
      spatial
      development of metropolitan areas.
