      Community Organizer
      California Policy Director

Background: Urban Ecology, a San Francisco Bay Area non-profit, believes that vibrant
neighborhoods are the building blocks of healthy cities and sustainable
regions. We envision an environmentally sound and socially just Bay Area in which
low-income urban neighborhoods thrive by offering a range of jobs, a mix
of housing types, different kinds of open spaces and choices for
transportation. Urban Ecology uses two major strategies to achieve its
mission -- policy advocacy and neighborhood planning. In neighborhood planning, Urban Ecology works closely with a wide range of
local stakeholders in a given community to identify local issues (such as
unsafe streets or! lack of open spaces), develop community goals, and
craft urban design and policy solutions that can improve the neighborhood.
Urban Ecologys policy advocacy seeks to attract public and private
resources to urban neighborhoods. Our goal with both policy advocacy and
neighborhood planning is to help to transform community-developed
neighborhood plans into built projects that benefit residents by providing
affordable housing, better transportation, safer streets and more green
