We are writing to let you know about two Masters degree programs at
American University that may be of interest to students seeking advanced
education in Global Environmental Policy Studies.

The first, Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, is a dual-degree
program with the United Nations Peace University in Costa Rica in which
students study sustainable development policy-making in both Washington,
DC and San Jose. Environmental protection can no longer be separated from
the challenges of international development. This program trains students
to participate in the formulation of policies aimed at advancing
sustainable development at the local, regional and global levels. Students
spend their first semester at American University learning the foundations
of sustainable development policy both in the classroom and through
involvement with policy- making bodies in Washington DC. They spend the
next two semesters at the UN Peace University studying concrete practices
and tracking international efforts toward sustainable development. They
return to American University for their final semester, during which they
write a Masters thesis, participate in an experiential workshop with
governmental and non-governmental policy-making organizations, and
complete their classroom studies of natural resource and sustainable
development policy. The Program is the first graduate-level course of
study in which students can learn about environmental and development
policies from the perspectives of both the global South and North. The
Program was spearheaded jointly by Maurice Strong, Rector of the UN Peace
University, and Louis Goodman, Dean of the School of International Service
      at American University.

The second Masters degree, in Global Environmental Policy, is an
interdisciplinary program that focuses on the challenges to global
environmental protection. Along with courses in the politics of world
environmental affairs, students study ecological science, environmental
economics and social science methodology to gain expertise in
the dynamics of transnational environmental harm and those political
efforts that aim to advance global environmental protection. The program
utilizes its location in Washington, DC to introduce students to key
national and international policy- making institutions and to research
institutes and non-governmental organizations working toward global
environmental well-being. The program includes a focus on international
environmental cooperation, transnational environmental justice, ecological
ethics and economic globalization and environmental protection.

Through internships, area workshops and university courses, both degree
programs offer students strong theoretical frameworks and practical
experience to enable them to participate in the environmental policy
      process as informed professionals.
