      The Environmental Services Department (ESD) is recruiting for Environmental Services Specialist/Associate and Assistant (ESS) positions.  The ESS series (Assistant/Associate/Environmental Services Specialist) defines a class of environmental professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining municipal environmental programs.

      The mission of the Environmental Services Department is to deliver world class utility services and programs to improve our health, environment, and economy. The department’s core services are wastewater management, garbage and recycling, drinking and recycled water, and watershed protection.  ESD plays a leadership role in helping San Jose achieve its "Green Vision" goals to protect our environment for the future.

      ESD is comprised of a staff of approximately 500, boasting a diverse set of skills and specialties among our team:  treatment plant operators, administrative professionals, biologists, chemists, inspectors, environmental program specialists, accountants, maintenance personnel, and more.  The department and its personnel demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork, environmental protection, and building good partnerships.
        

      The Department intends to use the candidate pool developed from this recruitment to fill vacancies specified in this announcement as well as future ESS vacancies.  Depending on qualifications, the application you submit may be considered for Environmental/Associate or Assistant ESS positions.  The current pay range for the Environmental Services Specialist series is available at: http://www.sanjoseca.gov/index.aspx?NID=709 .  These ranges do not include any compensation adjustments that may be considered by City Council for the upcoming Fiscal Year that begins July 2014.  Any candidates interested in positions in Sustainability and Compliance, Watershed Protection, Integrated Waste Management, and Water Resources programs are strongly encouraged to apply.  ESD currently has over 35 ESS positions.

      Duties include: Planning, coordinating, and staffing environmental outreach events; negotiating terms for consultant services; coordinating and monitoring the work of independent contractors; developing and maintaining databases for departmental information; analyzing and interpreting statistical, economic, and highly technical data; analyzing problems and identifying solutions; preparing presentations and written reports; facilitating community events and meetings; preparing and monitoring project budgets; developing and evaluating program goals and policies; preparing public education material regarding environmental services information; assisting the general public with respect to environmental compliance issues and environmental awareness; serving as a liaison to outside agencies and regulatory bodies; and performing field inspections.  The job specifications for the Environmental Services Specialist series is available at: http://hrclassspecs.sanjoseca.gov/humanresources/spec/8203s000.htm
