      Hayward’s Planning Division provides an excellent opportunity for an ambitious, outgoing planning professional seeking valuable experience and career advancement in a dynamic, fast-paced working environment. 


      The successful candidate will carry out professional planning responsibilities of average difficulty, related to current and/or long range planning. Areas of focus include neighborhood planning, demographic or housing analysis, code amendment, and land use and environmental studies. The successful candidate with apply planning knowledge in reviewing plans and will participate in explaining policies and regulations to the public. These positions also involve providing technical support to management staff. 

      As the sixth largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hayward is a diverse community centrally located in the East Bay at the intersection of Interstate 880 and State Highway 92. With a population of over 150,000, a growing downtown undergoing revitalization, an executive airport, three transit stations and a state university and community college, Hayward is a full service community undergoing dramatic transformation. 
      Ideal Candidate:The Assistant Planner position requires at least one year of technical experience in a city, county, regional or private planning agency, plus a bachelor’s degree in planning or related field. Membership in the American Planning Association is highly desired. The Associate Planner position requires at least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience equivalent to that associated with the Assistant Planner position, plus a bachelor’s degree in planning or related field. A master’s degree in planning or a related field is highly desirable and may be substituted for up to one (1) year of experience. Membership in the American Planning Association and American Institute of Certified Planners is highly desired. Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, as well as strong written and verbal skills and the ability to work with the public, are also required.
