Subject: Planning Intern position - City of Menlo Park
The City of Menlo Park is located on �The Peninsula,� between San Francisco
and Oakland on the north and San Jose on the south. The City enjoys easy
access from both US-101 and Interstate 280, as well as a direct connection
to the �East Bay� via the Dumbarton Bridge. The City borders the
communities of Atherton, Redwood City, Woodside, East Palo Alto, and Palo
Alto, as well as unincorporated San Mateo County lands. The City is home
to approximately 32,500 residents and 28,500 jobs. The City�s residential
neighborhoods are complemented by a number of active commercial areas, most
notably the El Camino Real and Sand Hill Road corridors, the central
downtown district along Santa Cruz Avenue, and the M-2 industrial district
near Bayfront Expressway and US-101.
SALARY: $18/hour, depending on qualifications

The Planning Division of the Menlo Park Community Development Department is
seeking a highly motivated individual for a planning intern position for
the fall of 2013 (approximately 24 hrs./wk). Start and end dates and
hours/days are flexible. The position would be for approximately three
months, with the possibility of an extension depending on performance, the
Planning Division�s work load, and available funding.
Local government planning plays a meaningful role in creating communities
that enriches lives. The intern position provides hands-on experience in
the public sector and an opportunity to work in a small, team-oriented
environment. The position will focus on various aspects of long-range
planning, with a focus on data collection and analysis using GIS
(Geographic Information Systems). There will also be opportunities for
involvement with the development review process, including plan review for
single-family residential projects, assistance at the public information
counter, and the ability to interact with other city departments integral
to the planning profession. The position can be beneficial in preparing
for a career in local government or other planning agency. The position
reports to the Senior Planner and would provide support to Planning staff
on a variety of activities. The position may include, but is not limited
to the following activities:
� Advanced Planning and Research: Gathers, organizes,
summarizes and interprets data on community demographics and properties
needed to support planning activities. Conducts field surveys, makes
calculations, takes measurements, and produces maps, charts and other
graphics necessary for effective evaluation of planning policies.
� GIS: Assists in development and implementation of Geographic
Information Systems (ArcMap) components for land-based analysis.
� Current Records: Updates planning records and maps to assure
accurate and up-to-date information. Establishes records of new information
gained from surveys and special studies, which may require
work-related database maintenance and report generation. Researches
records to obtain information needed for studies and/or responding to
� Current Planning: Assists with review of applications for
conformance with various city ordinances and policies, checks development
applications and sites, prepares visual aids as needed. Performs
site inspections of residential and commercial projects.
� Graphics: Assist with the design and development of graphics
to incorporate into handouts, presentations, and other planning documents.
� Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: At a minimum, prospective candidates will be
pursuing or have a Bachelor�s or Master�s degree in urban planning, urban
and regional studies, geography or related field from an accredited college
or university, and have an interest in public sector employment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Ideal candidate will be able to
collect and analyze data; perform independently when clear direction is
provided; work in a team environment; have good oral, written and
interpersonal skills; and be able to clearly document procedures, summarize
findings, and write reports and correspondence. Proficiency with Microsoft
Word and Excel is required. Knowledge of ArcMap and related ESRI products,
database management, SketchUp and Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, and/or web
page design is highly desired.
