      About the Internship:

      The GIS Intern will perform GIS mapping and analysis tasks in support of open space planning, resource management, and land acquisition activities. Internships are open to current students or post-grads within the last 12 months. Responsibilities include creating maps for District Board reports and presentations, compiling and synthesizing geographic data; developing attribute data for shapefiles; performing basic geoprocessing; maintaining and updating GIS databases as new data are collected; preparing, modifying and updating District site maps and brochures using ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator; providing graphic support for other departments including the development of maps, charts, displays, presentations, graphics, brochures, and drawings; collecting data in the field using GPS equipment.

      This is a temporary position with approximately 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 1,000 hours over an 6 month period. Financial compensation for this position is $17.856 - $22.298 per hour, depending on qualifications.* Benefits are not included.

      Basic Requirements:

      Successful candidates will have a background in geography, planning, environmental studies, landscape architecture, or another related field; experience with ArcGIS software; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm in cartography and map production. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to work well both in team settings and independently, and the willingness to occasionally work in rugged, remote settings. Knowledge of GPS technology, ability to interpret topographic maps, and familiarity with plotters is a plus.

      Working Conditions:

      Work is divided between District administrative offices in a group working environment and some field visits to map, photograph, and collect field data. Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous District open space areas, which may involve working alone in wild land areas and traversing rough, difficult terrain.

      About the District:

      Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is an independent special district created by the voters of northwestern Santa Clara County in 1972, joined in 1976 by southern San Mateo County, and most recently expanded to the San Mateo coast side in 2004. The District's purpose is "To acquire and preserve a regional greenbelt of open space land in perpetuity; protect and restore the natural environment; and provide opportunities for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment and education." The District owns and manages over 60,000 acres of land in 26 open space preserves. Activities on the open space preserves include hiking, cycling, horseback riding, picnicking, jogging and nature study.
