      The City of Palo Alto Transportation Division
      is currently recruiting for an Assistant Coordinator for the Safe Routes
      to School Program.
      This is a part-time assignment, subject to grant funding.

      The Program:

      The City of Palo Alto is committed to creating and sustaining a
      community partnership with the Palo Alto Unified School District and
      Palo Alto PTA to reduce risks to students and encourage more families to
      walk and bike or use other alternatives to driving more often.
      In the spring of 2012, the City of Palo Alto initiated an expanded Safe
      Routes to School (SRTS) program, funded by a two-year Vehicle Emissions
      Reductions Based at Schools (VERBS) grant from the Santa Clara County
      Valley Transportation Authority. The project will enhance the City's
      Five E's approach to Safe Routes to School programming: Education,
      Engineering, Enforcement, Encouragement, and Evaluation.
      The VERBS grant will allow the City to evaluate the existing conditions
      for students traveling to school, assess current education programs,
      develop new encouragement tools, and explore policy changes to improve
      school commute safety. In addition, the program includes development of
      Walk and Roll to School maps as well as Recommended Improvement maps for
      each school.
      The Position:

      The Assistant Coordinator, under limited supervision, performs
      professional work requiring specialized knowledge or training in a
      specific field in support of a City program (such as Safe Routes to
      Schools) or organizational unit. The work performed is generally varied
      in character and similar to or equally complex to that of a career
      position, but is not managerial.
      This a temporary, half-time position with a schedule that may vary
      beyond normal work hours if needed to support public meetings.

      Main Responsibilities:

      A. Assist with project management including contract administration,
      progress reports and the completion of grant funding documents.
      B. Assist in the coordination of the Palo Alto Safe Routes to School
      project to reduce vehicles miles traveled to school via identified
      initiatives in Education, Encouragement and Evaluation.

      Up to $30.00 an hour, depending on qualifications.

      Essential Duties:
      Minimum Qualifications:
      Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will have excellent computer
      skills, including experience with creating, manipulating, and reporting
      from a variety of tools such as:
      * Spreadsheet * Graphics * Data Base * Surveys

      Experience or college level course-work in transportation issues is
      desirable. Experience developing and evaluating surveys, along with some
      work experience providing customer service to the public is also
