The California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) serves and
safeguards the people of California and protects the property and resources
of the state. CAL FIRE, based in Morgan Hill, seeks a GIS intern to assist
with data gathering, data creation, map production, and data analysis
efforts. The internship, though unpaid, would offer valuable experience
and great resume-building potential while serving the community and
applying solid GIS skills to meaningful work. The dates and times for the
position can be highly flexible to support the interns availability and
still accommodate the needs of CAL FIRE. ****

The intern, working in the Morgan Hill Emergency Command Center (ECC),
would be supervised by the ECC Battalion Chief and the on-site
Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) Administrator. The primary task would be to
collect current geospatial data sets from the communities served by CAL
FIRE and its cooperators including The South Santa Clara County Fire
District, City of Morgan Hill, all other areas of Santa Clara County,
Alameda County, Contra Costa County, and western Stanislaus and western
San Joaquin counties. These data sets would include roads, parcels,
ownership data, fire hydrant locations and orhtophotography, protection
boundaries for fire, law enforcement, parks and recreation. Besides
organizing the data efficiently in a geodatabase, the intern is also
responsible for editing existing data sets and producing maps upon request.
The Dispatch Center has one workstation with ArcGIS 10 installed.****

Ideally, the intern would assist the District for approximately 20 hours
per week through the end of 2013.****
