      Under the general direction from the Deputy Director of the Community
      Development Department/Planning Manager and Community Development Director,
      the Senior Planner for Advanced Planning will be heavily involved in
      several exciting planning projects including coordinating and organizing
      Task Force meetings; preparing meeting materials; drafting and reviewing
      plan and environmental documents; and managing the consultant team for the
      East Pleasanton Specific Plan which is currently in progress. Future work
      will include the 2014-2022 update of the General Plan Housing Element,
      updates of other General Plan elements, and Specific Plans, including the
      Downtown Specific Plan. Other responsibilities will include tracking local,
      state and regional planning issues and changes to planning and
      environmental laws. Although local government planning agency experience is
      desired, the City is open to candidates with consultant planning experience.

      Pleasanton has a reputation for building quality residential and business
      development projects. As such, the Senior Planner will need to work closely
      with City Council, City staff, Planning Commission, community
      representatives, environmental groups, developers, consultants and
      neighboring jurisdictions. The Senior Planner represents the City in
      outside meetings, gives presentations, prepares comprehensive written staff
      reports on assigned projects and recommends courses of action.

      The new Senior Planner will need a broad working knowledge of planning and
      development review and the California Environmental Quality Act as well as
      experience in preparation of a general plan.


      If you have considerable (5 years desirable) experience in land use
      planning as an Associate Planner or equivalent position, possess a
      bachelor�s degree in urban planning, architecture, public administration or
      related field, are a self-starter, desire career advancement and want to
      play a major role in helping to shape a quality community, while preserving

      Considerable knowledge of: The principles and practices of urban planning .
      Federal, state and local laws related to planning, zoning, land use
      control, and the environment. Research methods employed in the collection,
      evaluation, and presentation of data.

      Skill to: Collect, analyze, and interpret data pertaining to planning and
      zoning situations. Plan, organize, and conduct land related planning
      studies. Apply urban planning and zoning principles and methods to local
      problems. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Review work of
      others and to supervise in a tactful, clear manner. Handle assigned
      projects in a manner appropriate to a fully qualified professional planner.
      Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and
      function in a team environment.

      qualifications outlined above. The most qualified candidates will be
      invited to an oral board interview with the City, tentatively scheduled for
      the week of April 29, 2013. A select group of candidates will be asked to
      provide references once it is anticipated that they may be recommended as
      finalists; references will be contacted only following candidate approval.
