      Greenbelt Alliance seeks 2-3 motivated individuals to help develop and use new technology to get more people involved in making their neighborhoods better. This initiative will marry an innovative online civic engagement tool with our successful on-the-ground community outreach, making it easier for residents to address place-based issues in their communities. Technology and Civic Engagement Interns will support Greenbelt staff in reaching out to community groups and elected officials, marketing the tool to potential users, and testing out the pilot platform.

      Technology and Civic Engagement Intern Responsibilities
      Activities may include:
      Helping to conduct focus groups with potential users of the platform;
      Marketing the initiative to relevant stakeholders and local community groups ;
      Setting up meetings with local organizational partners and municipal staff ;
      Coordinating and providing materials for advisor meetings:
      Beta-testing the website ;
      Connecting with city staff to collect data to use on the site ;
      Researching appropriate analytics to measure during pilot ;
      Assisting project staff as needed to meet project goals and deadlines;
      Technology and Civic Engagement Interns will report to the Project Manager for this initiative and will work with other staff as appropriate.

      This position requires a two to four day/week commitment for at least three months starting April 2013; at least a five-month commitment is preferred. Interns are expected to adhere to a regular schedule, but working hours are flexible and interns can generally choose this schedule. Much work will be completed between 9am and 5pm weekdays in the Greenbelt Alliance main office in downtown San Francisco, though interns will also need to travel to conduct outreach. The SF office is BART and MUNI accessible and public transportation is encouraged.

      Skills Desired
      Greenbelt Alliance is seeking candidates with knowledge of urban planning issues – particularly land use and public participation processes – strong writing and organizational skills, community outreach experience, the ability to work independently to meet deadlines, and a friendly, professional demeanor. Social media skills, web development experience, and/or Spanish fluency are preferred. Graduate students and recent college graduates are encouraged to apply, but advanced undergraduates will also be considered.

      The position is unpaid. Travel reimbursement is available for interns working more than 30 hours a week who can demonstrate financial need.
      This position is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the growing online civic engagement ecosystem. Interns will meet community leaders and elected officials from around the region and will learn about environmental and urban planning issues while developing a network of contacts and references in the non-profit field. When applying for future jobs, interns will be able to point to tangible results from their work and describe discrete projects that they led.
