SEEKING: Student Interns interested in environmental innovation in the City San José (City). Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and students with course work or experience in environmental studies, urban planning or related fields are encouraged to apply. We are looking for candidates with:
Proficiency with applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publishing and Mapping
Strong research, analysis, and writing skills
Ability to create work products through independent work as well as team collaboration
DUTIES: The interns will be a part of the Environmental Services Department special events program that
assists events with waste diversion efforts. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Representing the Zero Waste Events Team at pre-event meetings that include city stakeholders such
as the Environmental Services Department (ESD), the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA), Parks
Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS), San José Fire Department (SJFD), and San José
Police Department (SJPD).
Conducting on-site evaluations of special events in the City (i.e. San Jose Jazz Festival, Italian Family
Festa, Christmas in the Park, etc).
Assisting with grant contract processing of 2013-2014 Green Event Grant Program.
Assisting in communicating with Event Organizers, Grantees, Vendors, and other stakeholders.
Assisting with preparation, implementation and evaluation of Zero Waste Events Program (Green
Event Grant, Green Event Certification, Eco-Station Loan, and council adopted policies).
Assisting with Zero Waste Events Program redesign, including implementation of focus groups.
Assisting with design and implementation of industry conferences and exhibit halls.
Assisting with the implementation of professional training for sustainable landscaping.
SCHEDULE: Flexible, up to 20 hrs/wk with some weekend and evening work. Full time hours may be available during school breaks. Commitment of one year is required. Internship may last up to two years. This is a parttime, unbenefited/temporary position, and there is no guarantee of hours or longevity.
SALARY: San Jose pays interns per the City's graduate/undergraduate pay schedule, from $10.50-$13.50/hr.
