      Limited Term Summer 2013


      In conjunction with the Two-County (San Mateo and Santa Clara) Regional Summer Internship Program, the City of Mountain View has several Intern opportunities for recent college graduates, graduates or law students who are interested in contributing to the community. Each opportunity below indicates whether it will be paid or volunteer (unpaid).



      THE CITY AND THE POSITION:



      The City of Mountain View is a progressive, full-service city that operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The City is just over 12 square miles and is home to approximately 75,000 residents. The City provides an excellent environment for learning and professional growth. An Internship with the City of Mountain View offers valuable, real-world job experience in one of California's best-managed cities! Through this volunteer Internship, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of programs and services, while enhancing and sharpening your writing, presentation, research, analysis, and critical thinking skills. This City experience will be supplemented with training and access to professionals in your interested field as part of the Two-County Regional Intern Program.



      The position of Intern in the City organization provides support level administrative, research, and analytical assistance, while providing the opportunity to learn about local government. This volunteer position is part-time, and does not include benefits. The position has flexible scheduling and College/University credit may be provided, as applicable. The position receives direction and guidance from a supervisor that is part of the management staff. Interns will have the opportunity to gain insight into local government through placements in the following Departments and Divisions (special requirements are noted below):




      City Attorney's Office (volunteer): Completed third year law student is required. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      City Manager's Office (paid): Public Administration or Public Policy interest and skills are required. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Budget Analyst - Finance Department (volunteer): Proficient in Excel and Word, be detail oriented and have good communication skills. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Revenue - Finance Department (volunteer): Proficient in excel and web applications, be detail oriented and have good communication skills. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Purchasing – Finance Department (volunteer): Interest in purchasing and negotiation practices. Proficient in Word Office suite, be detail oriented and have good written and verbal communication skills. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Engineering - Public Works Department (volunteer): Interest and skills in civil engineering required. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Facilities - Public Works Department (volunteer): Administrative support and data entry required. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Human Resources (paid): HR and organizational interest and skills required. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Information Technology (volunteer): Exposure to technologies with computers, networking, telecommunications, mobile devices and/or other systems. Proficient in Microsoft Office products PowerPoint, Word and Excel is preferred. Candidate will work in an office environment.



      Community Development (paid): Research and data entry required. Background in housing, transportation, landscaping and sustainability legislation and other planning activities is required. Candidate will work in an office environment.






      TYPICAL DUTIES/PROJECTS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

      Under direct supervision, gain exposure to and provide assistance with programs and projects that includes, but is not limited to the following:


      City budgeting, city-wide policy development, interdepartmental coordination, intergovernmental relations, community information and outreach, customer service, telecommunications, youth services, land use planning and public works project support, environmental services, and a variety of special projects.

      Assist with preparing informational materials (including graphics and photography), press releases, proclamations, resolutions, correspondence, presentations, and electronic communications.

      Research and analysis of legislation, and assistance in preparing, financial analysis, comparative analysis, memorandums or reports.

      Perform a variety analysis for reports to include primary and secondary-source surveys, and administrative work assignments.

      Work on special projects or other related administrative work as assigned.


      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY—SEE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS NOTED ABOVE):


      Interest in working in local government

      Knowledge of modern principles of organization, administration and management

      Knowledge of computer usage and its applications, and use of modern office equipment.

      Ability to research, compile, analyze and interpret data

      Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others and work in a team oriented environment

      Ability to interface and work in a diverse working environment

      Ability to learn, retain, and use technical terminology

      Ability to withhold the City's code of ethics and organizational mission


      TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

      Recent college graduate, law student, or graduate student majoring in Political Science, Government, Law, Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business, or other closely related field.



      Must possess a valid California Driver's License with a good driving record.

      SELECTION PROCESS:

      Application screening will be part of the testing process. Those most closely matching the desired qualifications for volunteer Intern assignments will be invited to participate in an interview. Depending on the number of applications, the above process may be altered.
