INTERN POSITION: Parks and Facilities Operations Intern
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
TERM OF ASSIGNMENT: 20 hours/week for 10 weeks
INTERN SUPERVISORS: Andrew Arzaga, Parks Supervisor; Art Rosales, Interim Parks Supervisor, and Enrico Reyes, Facilities Supervisor.
The City of South San Francisco is a fully independent and highly commercialized full-service City with an estimated population of 63,500 growing to 100,000 during business hours. South San Francisco is an international center for the biotechnology industry, housing over 80 companies on 3.5 million square feet and it is strategically located on the west shore of the San Francisco Bay, in northern San Mateo County, 10 miles south of San Francisco.
The Parks and Facilities Division of the Parks and Recreation Department employs 41 skilled professionals responsible for the maintenance of public facilities, parks, medians, landscape areas, and city-owned trees. This includes playground inspection and maintenance, picnic areas, park fencing, tennis courts and other sports amenities, Centennial Way, and public facility improvements, and custodial maintenance. Areas of responsibility include not only day to day maintenance, but planning new park and facility design and renovations, equipment replacement, sports courts, tree planting, and utility budgeting.
The Intern will work with staff to identify, organize, and digitize parks and facilities architectural renderings and maps; maintain park Geographic Information System (GIS) to record city infrastructure; develop a tool and procedure for future tracking of city-wide utility usage; and research and recommend site specific future environmental best practices for utility cost saving methods. Tasks may include updating spreadsheets documenting water meter usage, additional mapping projects, and other duties as time allows. Additional projects may be assigned depending on time and areas of interest.
OUTCOMES: Research city utility usage; create a utility usage and cost tracking method; research future cost saving methods using environmental best practices therefore reducing the city's carbon footprint.
REQUIRED & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking students who are working towards college or graduate degree in the field of Landscape Design, Construction Management, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Recreation, or related field; are creative; able to speak to groups of people; team oriented; and collaborative. Applications must be well versed in the use of technology (computer programs such as Word, Access, and Excel for data management, technical report writing, and budgeting; GIS and GPS mapping experience with ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server is desired).
