The City of Oakland Strategic Planning Division is seeking an intern
to assist with long-range planning projects; the internship provides a
great opportunity to learn about efforts the City is making to improve
the quality of life for residents, and to encourage new housing,
office, and retail development. On-going projects the internship
would assist with include: the West Oakland Specific Plan; the Lake
Merritt Station Area Plan, the Broadway Valdez Specific Plan, as well
as other projects. Interns will be expected to help with logistics and
facilitating community workshops, preparing maps in GIS, preparing
graphics, and conducting research.
Skills and Abilities: Minimum qualifications include proficiency with
Microsoft Word and Excel, along with graphic and mapping capabilities.
Interns should be comfortable using ArcGIS, which would include, at a
minimum, having skills in basic map design and experience performing
attribute and spatial queries. Candidates should also know how to use
programs in the Adobe Suite (e.g. Illustrator, InDesign, and/or
Photoshop); also familiarity with SketchUp is ideal.
Compensation Range : Up to $16 per hour, D.O.E.
Availability: Interns should be available to work at least 15 hours
(up to 22 hours) per week during regular business hours. This
internship is only guaranteed through June 30, 2013, with the
possibility of summer employment, depending on the resolution of
ongoing budget negotiations. Days of the week are flexible.
