      THE POSITION

      Under the direction of the Planning Manager, the Assistant Planner primarily processes design review permit applications for residential and commercial projects within the Town, but also processes a variety of other zoning permits as well as performing advance planning tasks and code enforcement. The Assistant Planner prepares written staff reports and makes presentations to the Design Review Board, and may make presentations to the Town Council, Planning Commission and various committees. The Assistant Planner confers with and advises architects, builders, attorneys, contractors, engineers, and the general public regarding Town development policies and standards. The Assistant Planner serves as the primary Planning Division contact at the public counters, and also acts as backup to the front desk when the department clerical position is away from the office. The Assistant Planner is required to make site visits in a Town owned vehicle.

      A valid California Driver's License is required.

      THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

      The ideal candidate will be a team player able to work cooperatively with staff members, architects, contractors and homeowners. He/she will work well with the public; have excellent verbal and written skills; and a personal commitment to excellent customer service.

      The ideal Assistant Planner will be a skilled professional who can work independently, meet deadlines, and prepare complex reports and documents. The ideal Assistant Planner shall possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, have a good understanding of planning and zoning principles, and value a strong customer service orientation. Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

      • Be committed to a "team approach"
      • Be able to forge and maintain cooperative relationships with elected officials, the public and staff members
      • Be an energetic, enthusiastic and hardworking individual who possesses a good sense of humor
      • Possess strong organizational skills

      QUALIFICATIONS

      Education and experience: the Assistant Planner position requires education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning or a related field. As this is an entry level planning position with the Town, one year of related experience is strongly desired.

      THE TOWN OF TIBURON

      The Town of Tiburon, population 9,000, is located just a few miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in southern Marin County. The exceptional views, high quality of schools, serene lifestyle, low crime levels, and quality services makes Tiburon one of the most desirable places to live in the State.

      Tiburon prizes its historic village character while enjoying easy access to San Francisco. In 2000, Worth Magazine listed Tiburon as the 16th most expensive place to live in the United States. With such affluence comes the expectation for high level public services on the part of the residents and the business community. The Town strives to meet that expectation.

      THE ORGANIZATION

      Tiburon was incorporated in 1964 as a General Law city and operates under a Council/Manager form of government. The Town has a five-member Town Council from which the Mayor is selected. The Town has 41 employees and a total operating budget of $8.8 million. The Town is fiscally healthy with over $9 million in reserves. The Town has four operating Departments: Administrative Services, Community Development, Police, and Public Works. Town Staff takes pride in a team approach to problem-solving and a congenial work environment.

      THE DEPARTMENT

      The Community Development Department consists of the Planning Division and the Building Division. The Assistant Planner works within the Planning Division of the Town. The Planning Division is responsible for managing the physical development of the Town in an orderly manner, in accordance with the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Municipal Code, Town Council policies, as well as State and Federal regulations. The Division consists of four employees: Director of Community Development, Planning Manager, Planning Secretary and the Assistant Planner.

      COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

      Retirement: the Town participates in the CaiPERS retirement system. Based on your status with CaiPERS you will either be enrolled in the 2% @ 55 retirement formula in which employees contribute 7%, or in the 2% @ 62 formula whereby employees contribute 50% of the normal cost, which is currently 6.5%.

      Cafeteria Benefit Plan: the Town provides a monthly allowance of $1,337/mo. towards medical, dental, life insurance, and long- term disability insurance for employee and dependents. If the full amount is not used, any remaining portion up to $400 per month shall be deposited into the Town's Deferred Compensation Plan in the employee's name.

      Vacation: twelve days per year for first five years.

      Sick Leave: accrue one day per month with unlimited cap.

      Holidays: twelve paid holidays per year.

      Work Schedule: the Assistant Planner position works a 9/70 schedule, with every other Friday off. The Town works a 35 hour work week.
