RESEARCH ASSOCIATE I OR II - SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS IN
Summary Description: WRI is seeking candidates for a new position in
the WRI Center for Transport and Environment. EMBARQ acts as a catalyst
socially, financially, and environmentally sound solutions to the problems
of urban transport in developing countries. EMBARQ will concentrate on
helping policy-makers adopt sensible transport strategies, try out likely
solutions, and evaluate them openly and fairly. Results of its various
projects will be shared with other cities and countries. Initially, EMBARQ
will work with governments, research institutes, and non-governmental
organizations in about five cities in the developing world. EMBARQ 's
partnership is with Mexico City, one of the world's biggest cities that
experiences serious transport problems.
Major Responsibilities: The Associate will focus on EMBARQ s work in Latin
America, in particular in Mexico City. There the work program has three
related emphases: creation of a bus rapid transit system and its
integration with the existing Metro; the testing and promotion of clean,
vehicle and fuel options for the heavy duty bus fleet, and promoting
measures and tests to reduce pollution from existing vehicles.

surveys for both BRT development and for the entire region of Mexico City.
Key results will be communicated back to our Mexican colleagues;

Qualifications: The individual selected for this position will have a

economic and institutional perspective, as well as specific knowledge and
understanding of transport policy/planning and/or pollution control. He or
she will have an advanced degree in engineering, economics, environmental
studies related to air pollution, transport planning, or a related
discipline, as well as at least two years of experience working on

strong research skills, demonstrated ability in policy analysis, and
excellent written and oral communication skills. The successful candidate
will be a highly motivated self-starter with strong organizational skills;
