Marin Agricultural Land Trust – Executive Director
Location: Point Reyes Station, CA
Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) is a 30 year-old nonprofit land
conservation organization that protects farm and ranch land in Marin
County, California by acquiring agricultural conservation easements in
voluntary transactions with landowners. As of January 2012, MALT holds
68 easements on nearly 44,300 acres. MALT has a 15-person professional
staff. Its offices are located in Point Reyes Station, CA
The Executive Director is responsible for providing strategic vision
and leadership for MALT’s mission and for the management of all
programs, activities and staff of the organization.
These include the agricultural land conservation program, development
and fundraising, communications and public awareness, strategic
relationships, and financial management. S/he will manage and lead a
professional staff of approximately 16 (full and part-time) and will
report to the Board of Directors, which, in accordance with the
requirements of MALT’s bylaws, is composed of about 1/2
agriculturalists and 1/2 non-ag members.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Works in partnership with the Board to provide strategic direction
and policies that encompass long and short-term plans.
Establishes and implements performance measurements that will
guide both strategic and operational decision-making.
Partners with the Board to build and sustain long-term
relationships with key donors and stakeholders.
Builds and strengthens important relationships with the
agricultural community, broader Marin community, the County of Marin,
funding partners and related organizations, groups and constituencies.
Oversees the day-to-day operations of MALT and hires, manages,
evaluates, motivates and mentors staff. S/he will continue to build an
experienced and talented staff and provide opportunities for them to
develop and grow in the organization.
Ensures that the organization’s resources, programs and staff are
focused on MALT’s agricultural land conservation mission.
Provides oversight of the financial performance and stability of
the organization; and ensures the quality of financial records and
accounting; and the adequacy of financial reporting and budgeting.
Oversees all financial development efforts to ensure that
financial resources are available to support approved plans, respond
to opportunities, and meet long-term financial needs.
Plays a leadership role in fundraising and major donor solicitation.
Advocates and seeks grant funding from local, state, and federal
government sources along with public, private and family foundations.
Works closely with development to encourage board members, staff
and volunteers to participate effectively in enhancing the financial
resources of the organization.
Provides focus and direction to MALT’s agricultural conservation
easement acquisition and stewardship programs.
Works closely with staff to prioritize agricultural land
preservation opportunities and manage implementation of effective
Communications and Outreach
Ensures effective communication to all stakeholders, including
board, staff, members, landowners, and strategic partners.
Serves as the primary spokesperson and public representative for MALT.
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in
managing and growing an organization and will possess the following:
Ability to provide strong entrepreneurial and innovative
leadership in growing an organization while sustaining its current
Proven success in raising money for an organization or program.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in land conservation.
Proven track record of developing successful partnerships with
other groups/organizations with an ability to articulate and project a
compelling vision to a wide diversity of audiences and constituencies.
Demonstrated successful experience in working with boards
comprised of prominent leaders and community volunteers.
Ability to work successfully and positively in a culturally and
ethnically diverse community.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
