The City of Cupertino is currently recruiting for an Assistant/Associate Pla
nner. Planners perform a variety of professional planning activities
involving residential design review, use permits, subdivisions, and environm
ental review. The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate lev
el, depending on the level of qualifications and experience of the selected
candidate. Appointment to this position is limited and will end no later than
two years from the date of appointment.
Typical duties include the following: conduct studies and prepare reports re
lated to mid-range and long-range planning projects; evaluate and review dev
elopment plans for compliance; compile, update, and analyze data on land u
se, population, urban growth patterns, economic and social trends, industria
l development and other demographic data essential to land use planning; ass
ist in conducting analytical research investigations regarding environmental
or other planning related issues; interpret zoning ordinances, development s
tandards, city plans and policies regarding development for public inquiry;
process development applications and prepare Planning Commission reports;
give presentations to appointed and elected bodies including prepar
ation of graphic materials; respond to requests for planning information.
*A**ssistant Planner* - Knowledge of: principles, practices and trends of
public planning; maps, site plans, and architectural drawings; laws, rules, and
regulations pertaining to zoning and land use; statistical and research met
hods as applied to the collection, analysis, and presentation of planning da
ta; business correspondence, report writing, and English usage, spelling,
punctuation and grammar; computer software, including word processing, spre
adsheet, database and graphics applications. Ability to: interpret and expl
ain planning and zoning programs, ordinances, statutes and City policies and
procedures to the general public; read and interpret architectural and engi
neering plans and specifications; prepare reports on graphic presentations;l
earn applicable laws and regulations pertaining to environmental protection
and land use development; attend evening and weekend meetings; communicate c
learly and concisely both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effe
ctive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; anal
yze situations quickly, objectively and determine proper course of action. A
dditionally, on a continuous basis, sit at a desk or in meetings for long pe
riods of time, twist and reach office equipment, stand, walk, climb or squat
while conducting field checks; visually differentiate between colors on land
use maps; lift or carry weight of 10 pounds or less.
*A**ssociate Planner* � In addition to the Assistant Planner description - K
nowledge of: principles, objectives and procedures of municipal planning, urban
design, and zoning; environmental laws, regulations, and review processes; t
echniques used in the development and maintenance of comprehensive plans; ap
plicable laws related to sub-division, annexation, zoning and land use. Ab
ility to: perform complex planning work requiring independent judgment; repr
esent the Planning Division at community and neighborhood meetings.
*E**xperience and Education: *Both levels require a Bachelor�s degree from
an accredited college or university with major coursework in urban planning,
environmental studies, engineering, geography or related field. In addition
to the Bachelor�s degree: prior experience in a related field is preferred
but not required for Assistant Planner; 2 years of professional planning
experience is required for Associate Planner. Experience with Photoshop
and Arcview GIS is desirable. Membership in the American Institute of Certif
ied Planners is a plus.
*L**i**cense or Certificate: *Possession, or ability to obtain, a valid Cal
ifornia Driver�s License.
