      We have two full-time, paid summer internships, which will begin June 25 (or later). Please read the descriptions of the internships before you respond, as they have different focuses and are appropriate for different majors.

      If you are interested, please respond to this email with a letter of interest that explains which internship you are interested in and why you think you'd be a good candidate, a current resume and a transcript (unofficial is okay). I will select applicants with the most relevant backgrounds and skills to interview. I will accept letters of interest with information until June 3 and will interview, most likely, the following week or two.

      Time is negotiable - we have lots to do, but internships could be ¾ time if desired.


      (1) Sustainability Intern - Green Building, Green Cleaning


      Qualifications
      College student, studying in business, public policy, accounting, environmental science, engineering, architecture or related field.
      Must have excellent writing skills, pay attention to details, and be proficient in Excel and Word.
      Demonstrated interest in green building / Green Associate certification a plus.
      3.0 GPA or above
      Interests
      LEED, green building, public policy and process, green purchasing, sustainability

      Description of Work
      Intern will support the work of the Climate Change and Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability Associate Management Analyst and staff from the Parks and Recreation Department or Health and Hospital Services Agency on the following projects:

      · Review, evaluate and update the Green Purchasing Program at the Valley Medical Clinic.

      · Research and then support development of a Green Cleaning Policy and other appropriate policies for LEED

      · Develop templates and reporting mechanisms for tracking LEED points for the LEED EBOM project at Parks. This includes investigating purchasing processes and creating methods for tracking costs, recycled content, and other environmental criteria.

      · Support Plan Development for each of the LEED EBOM points at Parks.

      · Report on LEED EBOM progress at end of summer.

      · May support other energy, water and green building related projects as directed.

      · May support other sustainability projects as appropriate.
      Hours
      This is a paid, full-time summer position, with a maximum of 500 hours. Pay is based on what year of college has just been completed.


      (2) Sustainability Intern - Inventory and Analysis of Green Infrastructure and Facilities


      Qualifications
      College student studying natural resource management, ecology, environmental science, forestry, arboriculture, geography and especially data collection.
      Must have data collection skills, be able to write well, pay attention to details, and be proficient in Excel and Word.
      Ability to work independently.
      Must have car and CA drivers' license, as part of the work will be in the field. (we pay for miles)
      3.0 GPA or above.
      Interests
      Green infrastructure, trees, habitats, natural systems, geography, mapping, data collection.

      Description of Work
      Intern will support the work of the Climate Change and Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability Associate Management Analyst and the Gardening Team on the following projects:

      · Develop protocols for a tree inventory at General Fund County facilities.

      · In the field, measure, photograph, identify type of tree (as much as possible), note health, note location, etc. for all trees at facilities.

      · Compile maps and data sets on tree inventories, using collected information and quotes from tree care companies.

      · Participate in and document tree planting events by Our City Forest as part of the County contract to plant trees.

      · Survey and map bike lockers, bike racks and bike cages at County facilities.

      · Develop information on bike storage for County website for use by visitors and staff.

      · Analyze square footage for janitor assignments, and support the development of a system to determine equivalency of assignments.

      · May support other green facility or infrastructure related projects as directed.

      · May support other sustainability projects as appropriate.


      Hours
      This is a paid, full-time summer position, with a maximum of 500 hours. Pay is based on what year of college has just been completed.
