      Associate, Housing & Community Development
      www.svlg.org

Deadline for submissions is May 31st, 2012. Please submit cover letter and resume to housing@....

The Housing & Community Development Associate supports the housing work of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and the Housing Action Coalition. The Associate leads the constituency building efforts of these organizations in order to create more public support for housing and sound land use planning.

      BACKGROUND

Opposition to housing exists for a variety of reasons including school impacts, fiscal issues and increased traffic. Unfortunately, housing affordability remains one of the toughest challenges in Silicon Valley. The Housing Action Coalition was formed to create a supportive voice for housing bringing together disparate interests to facilitate the construction of more homes for those who struggle to live in Silicon Valley. The Coalition works closely with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a business association, on policy and project advocacy and serves as the hub of housing advocacy in Santa Clara County. It is a unique organization where disparate groups—labor, environmentalists, business and builders—unite under a focused agenda to facilitate the development of homes that will meet the needs of our community, economy and environment.

      RESPONSIBILITIES

The Housing & Community Development Associate provides staff support to the Housing Action Coalition and the various initiatives of the Coalition. The focus of the Associate's work is to grow the number of people willing and eager to constructively engage in housing issues. Specifically, the Associate is responsible for leading the effort to:
      - Organize educational forums to broadly educate potential housing advocates about housing and land use issues in their communities through the nonprofit housing community, businesses and market rate rental housing properties
      - Inspire, train, grow and more deeply engage existing housing advocates
      - Organize tours of housing and transit-oriented development
      - Coordinate the Neighborhood Leadership Council quarterly forums, a group of emerging community leaders

      SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Community organizing: This person will be expected to interact and inspire people to get involved in local government. A track record and experience as an organizer will be prioritized over subject matter (housing/planning) expertise.

Project Management: Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan/execute on events ranging from simple educational forums to logistically complicated tours.

Collaboration & People Skills: Ability to facilitate meetings and build excellent working relationships with community groups and policy makers. Ability to engender collaboration among diverse groups. Experience and knowledge of corporate culture in order to professionally represent the business community and successfully organize events on housing with businesses in Silicon Valley.

Initiative: This position requires someone who is constantly thinking about how to improve and make the program better and take the initiative to do so. For example, if a notice is put out to turn people out to a housing hearing and only 3 people show up, how do we get more next time? Constant reflection and improvement of the program is essential.

Knowledge of Housing & Land Use: Knowledge of land use and development issues, understanding of residential development, the entitlement process and city planning.

Communication: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to interact with diverse constituencies, understand political sensitivities and act with extreme diplomacy and professionalism as a representative of the business community.
