      Planner I ($2,976 - $3.617/month)
      Planner II ($3,514 - $4,307/month)

      THE POSITION

      Planner I is the entry level class in the professional planning series.
      Incumbents compile, analyze and interpret data related to social,
      economic, population, and land use trends; prepare written reports on
      various planning matters and elements of the General Plan and analyze site
      plans, development plans and subdivision maps. Incumbents in this class
      are trained in the full range of planning duties and may be assigned to
      the current planning or advanced planning sections within the Planning and
      Development Department. A Planner I may be promoted to Planner II after
      six months of experience in city service and upon the recommendation of
      the Planning Manager. One vacancy currently exists in the Planning
      Division.

      THE REQUIREMENTS

      NOTE: These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and
      do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the
      minimum qualifications on or before the posted final filing date. TO QUALIFY AN APPLICANT MUST HAVE: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
      degree in urban planning, architecture, engineering, landscape
      architecture, geography or closely related field. Related technical
      planning experience may be substituted for the required education on a
      year-by-year basis. LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Driver's License required at the time
      of appointment.

      EXAMINATION PROCESS

      The examination process will consist of the following:
      WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 50%: A job related written examination will be administered which may test a
      candidate's knowledge of general planning, codes, regulations and laws,
      zoning, subdivisions and maps, research methods, general government,
      graphics use; AND ability to conduct analytical analysis, apply
      judgment/interpersonal skills, enforce policies and procedures, perform
      mathematical computations, and exhibit proficiency in report writing.
      Candidates must achieve a passing score in order to qualify for the oral
      interview. If it becomes necessary to supplement the eligible list,
      additional interviews will be scheduled with additional passing candidates
      being invited. A writing exercise may be administered at the written
      examination which will be evaluated as part of the oral interview. The
      written exam has been tentatively scheduled for the week of June 16, 2003.
      ORAL INTERVIEW - 50%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct job-related oral
      interviews to evaluate a candidate's training, experience, and personal
      traits for the position. Candidates must achieve a passing score to
      qualify for the eligible list.

      Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for
      a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation.
