Community and Economic Development Agency Planning and Zoning
The City of Oakland Planning and Zoning Division is seeking an intern to
help staff with long-range planning projects. On-going projects include
the Lake Merritt BART Station Area Plan, the Broadway-Valdez District
Specific Plan, the West Oakland Specific Plan, and revising the
City's regulations for Parking, Mobile Food Vending and Urban
Agriculture. The internship provides a great opportunity to learn about
long-range planning at the City.
Examples of Duties: Intern duties may include, but are not limited to,
* Perform research on best practices and policies related to
long-range planning issues
* Conduct spatial analysis and prepare maps and graphic diagrams
* Assist with the writing and editing of staff reports for the
* Assist with community outreach efforts for long-range planning
projects, including compiling and maintaining lists of interested
parties, creating flyers and other outreach materials, and providing
staff support at community workshops.
* Respond to phone and email inquiries about the City's
long-range planning efforts.
Skills and Abilities: Minimum qualifications include proficiency with
Microsoft Word and Excel; strong writing and analytical skills; and
strong graphic and mapping capabilities. Interns should be comfortable
using ArcGIS, which would include, at a minimum, having skills in basic
map design and experience performing attribute and spatial queries.
Advanced GIS skills or advanced skills with other graphics programs
(e.g. Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is preferred.
Proficiency in one or more of the foreign languages commonly spoken in
Oakland (Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Vietnamese) is highly desirable.
Compensation: $16.27 per hour.
Availability: The Intern position is limited to 1,000 hours per fiscal
year (July 1 through June 30). Interns typically work between 2 and 4
days per week during regular business hours; scheduling of days and
hours is flexible. Part-time work during the academic year and full-time
work during the summer months is also an option.
