      ABOUT SPUR The San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association
      (SPUR) is one of North America’s preeminent urban planning and
      public policy organizations. Through research, advocacy and public
      education, SPUR promotes good planning and good government. SPUR is a
      member-supported nonprofit organization.

      GENERAL SUMMARY SPUR is seeking a communications intern to work
      closely with the Publication and Communications Manager on SPUR’s
      blog, website, social media networks, and our publication. This
      position will require a flexible candidate comfortable in performing a
      multitude of tasks. Ideal candidates will be enrolled in a masters
      program or a graduate from one of the following programs: Journalism,
      Communications, Public Policy, Urban Planning and related fields.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Serve as an editor for the blog • Maintain
      and update our social networks and monitor comment streams • Support
      Publication and Communications Manager in producing the Urbanist, fact
      checking, editing, and general research • Manage newsletter archive
      and publications library • Upload policy memos and other documents
      to our website • Reach out to relevant publications in advance of
      the release of our policy reports • Maintain our media contacts •
      Work with other Policy staff members as needed

      PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Copyediting • Previous
      experience on a publication online or print • Knowledge of Word and
      Excel to mail merge, database experience and Mac OS experience
      preferred • Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite • Some HTML
      knowledge • Ability to communicate in writing and over the phone •
      Communications and Public Relations skills • Strong attention to
      detail • An interest in cities, public policy, and urban planning

      Public Policy Intern

      GENERAL SUMMARY The Public Policy internship position is appropriate
      for anyone with strong research skills and interest in government
      budget, finance and operations. An ideal candidate will have a good
      grasp of how government functions and be drawn to methods by which
      processes can be improved. This position will help provide project and
      administrative support for good government policy research and for pro
      bono consulting teams working to improve the functioning of city
      agencies.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Research and analysis for relevant policy
      issues, best practices and trends • Ability to analyze and translate
      complex concepts, including government finance, budgeting, improving
      transparency in government agencies, and identifying effective
      solutions to these concepts • Write and blog about current events
      and innovative policy solutions • Provide administrative support for
      pro bono partners consulting with city agencies

      PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Interest in and
      familiarity with SPUR’s public policy issues and positions •
      Strong research and writing skills • Ability to communicate
      effectively over the phone and via email • Proficiency with
      Microsoft Office, database experience and Mac OS experience preferred
      • Project management skills • Interest in public policy analysis,
      development and governance • Excellent communication and analytical
      skills • At least two years of previous work experience • Ability
      to work with a variety of people in a complex political environment We
      are looking for an intern currently enrolled in (or a recent graduate
      of) a graduate program in business, public policy, public affairs,
      not-for-profit management or a related field. College graduates with
      exceptional skills will also be considered.
