SUSTAINABLE STREETS DIVISION*
*MULTI-MODAL PLANNER *
Under the general supervision of the Multi-Modal Planning (MMP) Section
Manager, the Multi-Modal Planner is responsible for providing technical
assistance and support to project managers in the development of
systems (pedestrian, bicycle, bicycle sharing, car/ride sharing, parking,
intelligent transportation systems, travel demand management, transit, taxi
and goods movement loading) plans. This team works closely with
otherSustainable Streetssub-divisions and other SFMTA
Divisions, external planning, design, construction, operating and funding
agencies, key stakeholders and other interested parties to deliver the
various modal plans, programs and documents.
The on-going projects in the MMP section include the Better Market Street,
Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Geary BRT, Bicycle Strategy,
Bicycle-Transit System Integration, WalkFirst Pedestrian Safety, Transbay,
Neighborhood and Station Area Circulation Plans, High Speed Rail
Coordination Planning, and Future Fixed Guideway Plans.
*NATURE OF WORK**:* Must be willing to work a 40-hour week as determined by
the department with occasional extra hours as needed.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:* The duties specified below are
characteristic of the range of responsibilities assigned to this position:
- Evaluates and makes recommendations on technical aspects of planning,
which involve various transportation modes;
- Collects, compiles and analyses field and other data concerning
- Prepares correspondence in response to public, Commission or other
- Interprets and integrates transportation policies; develops and
evaluates proposals for planning;
- Makes presentations to community, business and other groups;
- Assists in the preparation, analysis, or evaluation of reports and
plans for various transportation planning projects and/or grant requests;
- Applies computer-assisted analytical techniques to evaluate
transportation planning projects.
*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or
university; *AND* two (2) years of full-time transit planning and/or
transportation planning experience; *OR*
1. Possession of a Master�s Degree from an accredited college or
university in Planning, Transportation, Transportation Engineering, Public
Administration or other closely related field.
1. Additional transit planning and/or transportation planning experience
beyond the Minimum Qualifications as described in item 1 may be substituted
for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
2. Additional post-graduate education as described in item 2 of the
Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for required experience on a
year-for-year basis (30 semester units/45 quarter units equal one (1) year

The ideal candidate will also possess the following:
- Dual degree in planning and engineering preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Bilingual
in Spanish or Chinese is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently,
collaboratively, professionally, and be a team player.
- General understanding of project management (time, scope, schedule, and
budget). Current or willingness to obtain Certified Project Management
Professional is a plus.
- Understanding of regional, state and federal policy and funding
programs, particularly Federal Transit Administration and Federal Highway
- Computer skills; proficiency in Geographic Information System (GIS),
design (e.g., AutoCad, Adobe) and transportation modeling software (e.g.,
