      We are seeking an energetic and professional executive director to manage
      our San Mateo office. The executive director will work closely with the SSMC
      Board of Directors, and oversee two employees and several volunteers.



      DUTIES

      Summary:

      * The Executive Director reports to the Sustainable San Mateo County

      (*SSMC*) Board of Directors and is evaluated by the Board.

      * The Executive Director is expected to work independently of direct
      supervision.

      * The Executive Director is responsible for implementing and managing Board
      objectives and directives, consistent with SSMC*s by-laws, mission and
      financial objectives.



      Fundraising:

      * Develops and sustains a diverse funding base. Emphasis will be on
      corporate and foundation giving.

      * Growing the membership base and developing an individual donor base.



      Program Development and Administration:

      * In conjunction with the Board of Directors, assure that SSMC has a
      long-range strategy which achieves its mission and toward which it makes
      consistent and timely progress.

      * Provide oversight and leadership to existing programs; assess and define
      new program needs.

      * Manage and oversee successful implementation of the Sustainability Hub
      webtool - www.sustainabilityhub.net.

      * Provide leadership in developing program, organizational, and financial
      plans with the Board and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized
      by the Board.

      * Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of
      SSMC*s work.

      * Maintain official records and documents; ensure compliance with federal,
      state, and local regulations.

      * Develop and maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and
      trends in sustainability, with special attention to San Mateo County and the
      Bay Area.



      Communications:

      * Fully inform the Board and its Committees on the condition of SSMC and all
      important factors influencing it.

      * Publicize SSMC*s activities, programs, and goals.

      * Build and maintain sound, collaborative relationships with local
      governments, community groups, businesses, funders and other organizations.

      * Oversee publication of SSMC*s newsletter



      Staff and Volunteers:

      * In cooperation with the Chair, be responsible for the recruitment,
      employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.

      * Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance
      evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.

      * Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist
      program staff and volunteers in relating their specialized work to the total
      program of SSMC.

      * Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff
      (including volunteer staff) of top quality people.

      * Supervise contractors to ensure their activities follow their job
      descriptions, remain within budget, and meet their job deadlines and quality
      requirements.



      Budget and Finance:

      * Develop and maintain sound financial practices and controls. Ensure sound
      maintenance of essential financial, legal, and personnel records.

      * Ensure sufficient documentation and reporting to required funding and
      compliance organizations. Ensure compliance with by-laws and all federal and
      state regulations.

      * Work with the Treasurer and Management Committee to prepare a budget for
      Board approval; ensure that SSMC operates within budget guidelines.

      * Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit SSMC to carry out its
      programs.

      * Lead development and execution of fund raising strategy including grant
      writing and donor relations.

      * Ensure financial obligations are met and that accounts receivable are
      collected in a timely manner. Ensure the financial records are up-to-date
      and maintained according to generally accepted accounting principles.



      QUALIFICATIONS

      * Mini

      mum 3-5 years professional experience, Executive experience preferred

      * Strong writing skills, grant writing experience a plus

      * Outgoing personality, eager to engage with public to build and maintain
      relationships

      * Program management and development skills essential

      * Solid organizational skills

      * Events management experience preferred

      * Web/Computer savvy essential!: MS Office, QuickBooks, Internet required
      and database management preferred

      * Self-starter: able to work without close supervision

      * Detail oriented with an ability to multitask



      Salary $40-50,000 DOE plus benefits.

      Indicators Project Coordinator Job Opportunity We are seeking a part-time
      contract professional to manage the Indicators Report project. Position
      available immediately.



      Hours/Terms of Employment:

      Contract position without benefits. Employee*s rate of pay $30 - $40 per
      hour depending on experience with hours not to exceed 800. Term from present
      to June 30, 2012 with most hours worked from October through April.



      Responsibilities:

      The Indicators Project Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the
      Sustainable San Mateo County 2012 *Indicators for a Sustainable San Mateo
      County* report card, also known as the Indicators Report. The
      Coordinator/Editor will also be responsible for ensuring that all elements
      are written in a consistent style that adheres to generally accepted style
      guides.



      Specific duties include:

      * Project management, including recruiting volunteers, formatting/updating
      format and guidelines for researchers, coordination of indicators
      researchers* submissions and verifying sources and correct uses of
      information.

      * Editing each indicator and all other parts of the report before submitting
      for review by Indicators Committee.

      * Research, write and edit portions of the report including the Introduction
      and Summary, and sections prepared by volunteers. Review and edit the City
      Reports, to be researched, written, and edited by volunteers.

      * Work with SSMC staff to format and upload indicators report onto SSMC
      website

      * Work with the Charts editor and Graphics person to insure consistent,
      clear and attractive layout.

      * Update Research Guides for 2013.

      * Participate in the Indicators Committee and other meetings as requested.

      * Identify refinements, additional indicators that would enhance value, and
      implement refinements as appropriate.



      The Coordinator/Editor will act as project leader, ensuring that report
      development progresses from inception to completion and that actions are
      taken to mitigate any obstacles to completion. The overall goal for the
      Coordinator is to meet the project deadline and to deliver a high-quality
      report for publication.



      Skills Experience:

      * Bachelor degree in related field required, Masters preferred

      * Minimum 5 years professional experience

      * Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate the activities of large groups
      of people, experience in managing volunteers a plus.

      * Experience with primary research, collecting and analyzing wide ranging
      data sources, and writing reports of similar scope and size.

      Writing and/or editing experience within a publishing setting.

      * Familiarity with style guides, and understanding of style editing, or an
      ability to assimilate such information independently.

      * Ability to research and write sections of the report.

      * Understanding and familiarity with sustainability issues, specifically as
      they relate to San Mateo County and generally to the San Francisco Bay Area.

      * Expertise in the use of MS Word and Excel.



      Salary DOE plus benefits.
