      Subject: [SJSU_MURPs] Paid Internship - climate change

      Santa Clara County Facilities and Fleet Department has a paid internship position available in the Climate Change and Sustainability Program. If you are interested, please send a letter of interest - why this position fits in with your course of study and career path and why you would be a strong candidate - and a copy of your transcript (unofficial is fine). Please email these to me by May 10, as I will be moving quickly to hire the right person. Candidates selected from this pool will be sent an application and may be offered an opportunity to interview.
      We have funding for about 400 hours of work, beginning in May or June if you are available part time, and going through the summer as full time.

      The intern will be assisting the Climate Change and Sustainability Manager on a number of projects relating to doing an update of our Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for Operations and Facilities and the preliminary steps of an updated Climate Action Plan for Operations and Facilities. You are not expected to know the protocol for doing an inventory, but to bring strong basic skills as noted below.

      The skills needed to do this position well are

      * Ability to perform accurate and reliable calculations using Excel and the ability to spot answers that are not reasonable. A background in engineering or scientific research is appropriate, but not required.

      * Strong writing skills.

      * Ability to understand and apply complex protocol methods for inventories.

      * Good personal interaction skills, as there will be data that needs to be acquired from different departments.

      * Ability to solve problems, identify missing data and suggest solutions.

      In addition, an interest in energy, water and climate issues is key. In addition to the climate inventory work, there may be opportunities to assist with developing a Water Plan, working on the LEED EBOM program (LEED for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance), and supporting interdepartmental meetings on climate change goals and objectives.
      Thank you,
      Jill
