The Madera County Planning Department manages the County land use, including the General Plan, zoning ordinance, CEQA, Williamson Act, code enforcement, and zoning administration. Current planning involves processing of conditional use permits, variances, and subdivisions, and WIlliamson Act applications. Long range planning is involved with a number of grant projects, updating the General Plan, and Area Plan efforts. Accommodating growth pressure provides a challenge in addressing serious impacts, including water supply, transportation, agricultural land, and biological resources. Innovative approaches are needed, so that Madera County will be leading the way in guiding new growth responsibly.
Our small, cohesive department allows for broad experience to be gained in many aspects of public sector planning: Experience may be gained in GIS, permit tracking, and other computer systems; Involvement in both current and long range planning is available; An opportunity is available to be involved in the various stages of the CEQA process; Opportunities to interface with the public are readily available.
Please note that this is an unpaid internship, and the successful applicant will not have an employment relationship with the County of Madera.

Madera County is in the geographic center of the State. It is located in close proximity to Yosemite National Park, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is only two hours drive from the Bay Area. The County is traditionally agricultural and rural in nature, but has become a main focus in development in California, with over 40,000 housing units proposed in the past few years alone.
